Every stop is a place to start. Please, write a prison pen pal today.

We are always thrilled to hear from happy prisoners, and many write to tell us how great it is to be hearing from YOU - people on the outside who have cared enough to write a letter and send encouragement. We thank you sincerely for these acts of kindness. Here are some of the comments we have heard from prisoners, as well as some words from people like you…

From a prisoner in Huntsville, Texas:

"Mail is one of the most cherished items in a prisoner's life; he brightens when it arrives, and drops his head when his cell is passed by. But this night, I had mail. It was from WriteAPrisoner.com with an email for me from a woman in England! Here we are a few months later and if it isn't love, then we will remain forever friends. Just think, in a sea of websites and prisoners, she found me!! Are there still such things as fairy tale endings? Yes, I believe so!" - Patrick Cole

From a prisoner in Soledad, California:

"I placed an ad with your company earlier this year, and I wanted to thank you for the service you have provided me. Therefore, and I know this is going to be an unusual request, especially since my ad has only just begun to run in the last month, I wish to ask if you would suspend my ad on a temporary basis. My intention from the start was to hopefully, find some-ONE that I was compatible with, and write to only one or two at most. This is simply overwhelming. I feel compelled to write to each and everyone, as a matter of courtesy, but it has become impossible." - Victor-Raphael Moultrie

I first wrote to Jody in early January 2004 and we now write to each other several times a week and have spoken on the phone. And incredible as it may sound, I have already gotten to know her parents quite well. Jodi and I have fallen in love with each other. We are going to get together when she is released and have even talked about getting married." - David Patterson

I have only a 4th grade education but I am a very good preacher and I am thinking of putting together a sermon to go along with your kindness towards people who are locked up. From a pen pal on the outside:

One night last year I got on my computer because I wanted a pen pal to keep in touch with. To my surprise as I punched in Pen Pal ...Prison Pen Pal came up. Curious I was... I wrote to several of your inmates that were on your site and each one wrote back and each inmate had a gift and many talents such as poetry, art, crafts and most important a listening ear. One out of the few that I wrote really caught my eye. I was very taken by his letters and his determination to get to know me for me. Over the last couple of months our relationship has gone to a whole new level. He is stationed in NC and I am from TN. I recently took a job offer and it just so happened to be in his home town. I have yet to be approved for visitation because of my ID status of relocation, however we do plan on marrying one day here in the near future. To some this is just a Jerry Springer story, but if people were more open minded I am sure they would realize that they have made mistakes to, but were just lucky enough not to get caught. Michael pays for his mistakes each day and why should he not be entitled to happiness even behind those walls of steel. I have been the ray of sunshine of his life and he has added color to mine as well. I wake up each morning saying "God I hope I get a letter from my baby today". I know my letters are just as important to Michael. I also know that if you are reading this, there are so many inmates that would love to hear from you. It does take a lot of your time, so in a sense you have to be dedicated. I will have to send a photo as soon as Michael and I are lucky enough to have one taken. There is love out there, it is up to you to reach out and write!" - Michael Reel

"Generally when a person becomes incarcerated he becomes susceptible to all sorts of scam businesses focused on victimizing the locked in. I've considered several other sources towards establishing pen pals. Presently I'm locked down in a supermaximum security prison. I'm talking no movement. You even shower in your living area. Compassion and a sympathetic ear... well, it's time for me to reach out. What's most important for those of us on the outside to remember is that we benefit as much, if not more so, as the souls that are behind the walls. I am very happy that I was watching television at the precise moment your program was being featured. "I met Dwain by luck. I was writing a paper in one of my Criminal Justice classes about prisoners and how fair the justice system is towards inmates. I happened to stumble upon the web site writeaprisoner.com...I thought it was a joke...but I decided to enter regardless of my feelings...I clicked on TX and all these names came up...his ad was the first one I clicked on...at first when I saw his picture I was like "Oh my God...I can't write him" but, after reading his ad...I immediately changed my mind! He sounded so smart and lonely...craving some sort of a connection...It took him about 1 month to write me back...so long that when I did receive his letter it was a big surmise...then when I went to go see him in person...I knew right then and there "I was in love"...we have been together ever since...its been over a year...we are now getting married...on Dec. 9th 2005!!! Dwain has a long time before he gets out but I don't care... I'll always be by his side! If you decided to use my story that's great...I would love to tell my story in detail to anyone who will listen! but if you don't than that is also fine by me. i just want to take this time to tell you all from wirteaprisoner.com... "THANK YOU" for this wonderful service you provide to both us "outside" and to the men and women in prison...you truly are a blessing from God!!! I final found who I am meant to be with and we are very much in love!!!" - Irene Molina

"Bless" that person who understands what it is like to be alone..." - Carlyle Herring

From a pen pal on the outside:

"I would love to post this on your website. I wanted to say what a great service you offer to inmates. I started my writing my inmate several months ago. She is the one that sent in a letter to you WriteAPrisoner.Com thanking you for your service and what a difference our friendship has made in her life. Her name is Wanda Pruitt at Leath Correctional. You should have received her thank you letter by now. The best way I could share why this is such an important thing to do for another human being is the message in the short story below: An old man awoke just before sunrise, as he often did, to walk by the ocean's edge and greet the new day. As he moved through the morning dawn, he focused on a faint, far away motion. He saw a youth, bending and reaching and flailing arms, dancing on the beach, no doubt in celebration of the perfect day soon to begin. As the old man approached, he realized that the youth was not dancing to the bay, but rather bending to sift through the debris left by the night's tide, stopping now and then to pick up starfish and then standing up to heave them back into the sea. He asked the youth the purpose of the effort. "The tide has washed the starfish onto the beach and they cannot return to the sea by themselves," the youth replied. "When the sun rises, they will die unless I throw them back into the sea." The old man surveyed the vast expanse of beach that stretched in both directions beyond eyesight. Starfish littered the shore in numbers beyond calculation. The hopelessness of the youth's plan became clear and the old man said, "But young man, don't you realize that there are more starfish on this beach than you could ever save before the sun is up? You cannot possibly expect to make a difference!" The youth paused briefly to consider the old man's words. He then bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it as far as possible into the sea. Turning to the old man, he said, "I made a difference to that one!" ~ Author Unknown ~ I feel like the little boy in this story. The world is the skeptical old man. The star fish is my friend Wanda. That's is how society can make a difference. One person who believes they can make a difference to one person who needs them to survive. She's a great friend and a faithful penpal and I'm glad I met her through your service. WriteAPrisoner.Com is truly special ministry to forgotten souls who need a friend in there lives to encourage them and simply to care. Some are so alone and desperately need love and friendship. People aren't DISPOSABLE because they are in prison and not every person in prison is guilty. I hope more people will "take a chance" on a stranded little star fish on the shore and "make a difference" in there lives." - Margaret Ditty Virginia Beach, VA.

From a prisoner in Burkeville, Virginia and his wife:

"I recently placed an add with you to get your help in finding that "special" someone in my life. Well in just a few weeks I received a letter from a beautiful lady named Lee Ann from Virginia Beach, VA, just a few hours from where I am now. Her letters and words captured my heart and as of the 21st of April, it is our 1 month anniversary, and we are engaged to be married. I just wanted to say thank you from the both of us, and especially me because without your help I wouldn't have found the one "true love of my life". She is my heart and I live for her each and everyday. She is a part of me, that makes me who I am today. I could not live without her in my life. Her heart beats inside of me and fills me with love that I've never felt before in my life. I can't even begin to explain how much I love her and honestly I don't think there are words to explain it. I thank God for her in my prayers every night and I ask Him to watch over her and keep her safe because without her I am nothing. So to you WriteAPrisoner.com, thank you. You have made a lonely man who thought he would never find love again the happiest man on this earth. We have a love that is truly unbreakable because of you. TO MY FIANCé, Lee Ann, I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEAR." - Daniel Hedrick

We recently received this letter from Danny's soon to be wife, Lee Ann:

My name is Lee Ann and a good friend of mine is engaged to a man that is in prison and she has stood by his side for the past year and a half. I have seen how happy they are. Also, another friend of mine met a guy in prison and they are happy and in LOVE. Well, I decided to surf "writeaprisoner.com" and came across Danny Ray, so I wrote him and he wrote back. Well the intensity of feelings in our letters was beyond words....we actually "fell in love" by writing and getting to know each other. Then we spoke on the phone. That was it...I broke down in tears the first time I heard his voice. We were meant to be. That is all I can say. I LOVE him and he LOVES me. When we met in person, it was like "stars" our eyes locked and there we were. Need I say more? And that first kiss was like "fireworks". Well, we are planning our lives together. This man has touched me and I have touched his heart like no other couple could imagine. As soon as he gets out, we will have the Cinderella wedding that Danny Ray wants for me and we will live our lives together happily ever after. Every Sunday when I go to see him "we" long for the next Sunday. True Love is what we have!!!

From a prisoner in Texarkana, Texas:

"I am so pleased and grateful with your services that I don't know where to start. The main reason I decided to use your services was because of my hobby, stamp collecting. I wasn't looking for anything else because I was convinced it couldn't happen. I have never been more mistaken in my life. There was someone very special and understanding looking for me. There are no words that describe this woman. Because of all of her qualities, I tried to discourage her. Advised her to look for someone else out there. She simply refused to go away, convinced that we are made for each other. We enjoy writing and talking on the phone so much that I've lost interest in my hobby. I don't have the desire to answer anymore letters. However, I assure you that no letters went unanswered. I took the time to write to everyone who wrote me. I give you the most sincere thanks and asked that my ad be removed. Let someone else have that space and hopefully, they'll be as luck as I am. Again, thank you for your services.
