Hi All,
Ive recieved a visitation application form from my PP at Leath. Firstly, will I get approved if I did NOT know my PP prior to incarceration, I'd prefer to be honest in my application. Also, i live in New Zealand and have no social security number, which is requested on the form, is there an alternative that will be accepted or do I need to write to the SCDC for another form ?? Cheers for all your replies in advance.

Even if you decide it is worth the risk, please consider the consequences of lying to a DoC just because you want to visit a penpal. You could be found out. It could haunt you if you later want to enter the US for another reason.

I know that is a older thread but I got me thinking...if I would want to go see my Penpal sometime down the road, I would have to prove that I know him prior to his incarceration? Well of course I can't, cause he's my Penpal :/ So how does that work? How was that for everyone else, that went to see their Penpal?

when i went to visit in louisiana i had to fill out a form and it asked my relationship to the person who i was going visit. nothing about prior knowing.

when i went to visit in texas i didn't fill anything out. he had to add me to his list.

I have never visited a USA penpal, as the CIA intervenes when I apply for a visa. (I am considered a subversive person). But when I did contemplate visiting a soon-to-be-executed friend, I was able to get onto his visitor's list, without any problems.

Each state differs on their approach to this situation, so I cant really answer that. I do know that if it is a FED inmate you will most often be denied if you said you did not know them prior to incarceration. I do not say all because some have been approved. In my case it depended on my pp's counselor's personal take on the rule, as she was the one who decided if I got to visit or not. I am not sure but I think most fed inmates visitation is approved/denied by their counselor, and not 'the staff' in general or the warden.... As for knowing my pp in the past (which I obviously didnt) we made up a little story of me knowing her sister, and after meeting her at her sisters house, we became good friends. It worked and I was approved right away. It doesn't have to be able to stand up to examination, they dont have the time, it just has to be plausible.

That's too bad, Vinny. What is the big thing about "knowing" someone before they went to jail and what really does that entail, I wonder...the "knowing" part, I mean.
Did you, by the way, follow the advice of others to fudge it or did you go the straight-and-narrow way?

My request was denied, they didnt believe I knew my pp prior to incarceration.

Hi!

I don't know if it's the case for all facilities, but my PP facility and MANY others do state that you can't visit your PP if you didn't know him prior to incarceration. That being said, you can lie about it, they won't know...

(although I'd be glad if someone could answer this: can't the facility find letters and find for a hint that would explicitely say you met the PP when he was already incarcerated? I know they have other things to do, but let's say they decide to see if it what you stated it's true... they could find it, right? Assuming they scan all letters...)

As for the rest I have no idea :)

It goes like this: Even if they SCAN the letters, that's a LOT of mail to scan. They don't read all the mail - GOD HELP THEM if they had to read all the bullsh!t I write my husband!!!! Probably 20 pages a week or MORE. And I'm just ONE person.

So the only way to really get caught is if for some reason they are watching your pen pal hard. If he's on mail watch or they are listening to his calls. If they are not then you're all good.

The likelihood that they will remember having read your FIRST letter is so miniscule it's inconsequential. And if you don't want to come right out and say, "Should I lie on the application?" what you CAN say is, "I was thinking of coming over for a visit. It's been so long since I've seen you. Geez, how long is that now? What year did Barbara get married? It was 99 right?" You see what I'm saying. TRUST ME he will get the point and think you're so clever for having the wherewithal to have it all covered.

And as far as the social security number - I'd put my passport number and make a note there to identify it as such.

But if you don't lie you will DEFINITELY be rejected. You might be able to make an appeal to the Superintendent/Warden - perhaps they could SEE you're not a gang banger/drug runner, etc. lol. But if you lie, you're all but guaranteed an approval. Good luck.
