I heard the other day from someone with a PP in New Mexico that the state is taking away trailer visits from the inmates. And no letters will be allowed anymore in the near future, so postcards will be the only way of communicating.

That sucks! wonder how many states are going to follow up on this ridiculous rules

Hello, I’m new here!

Nope, I haven't heard an update, but could ask it for you if you'd like?

SO does anyone know the follow up to this? One of my pp is in NM and he hasn't mentioned anything like this as far as only post cards...

I think it just as likely to be part of the "punishment policy" the New Mexico Correctional Department seems to be adopting, seeing as they recently also made it illegal for any state inmates to place any kind of ad seeking pen pals, and forced those with ads already up to remove them.

no probably more like less work for the people in the mailroom. I'm not sure but I don't think jpays are allowed either. it really has to be postcards. But I know just as much as everyone else here. The only thing I read on her FB was a moan about how NM is banning all letters to inmates.

They might be having a problem with contraband and this is a quick easy way to eliminate a lot of that.

Maybe to force towards phone calls instead?

I fail to understand how cutting inmates off from their family and friends does anything to help them rehabilitate.

Is this a ploy to push everyone towards using a jpay-like service so that the prison profits?

Is that postcard rule just for the jails or for the prisons? Doesn't seem possible that they could take them out of prisons? I've heard a few states, including Oregon, talk about postcards only for the jails though. (Short term sentences or yet to be sentenced.)

this applies to prison, my friends penpal is serving a life sentence. But I'm with moxie here, I'd bombard them with postcards just to annoy the h*ll out of them *grin*

Being the smartazz I am, I would get a bunch of postcards, write my letter on them and mail them in a big envelope.

I wrote a postcard to a guy in Louisiana, and it was returned, as postcards aren't allowed at that facility... Some states wanting to only allow postcards? So freaking confusing!
