I visited my friend in prison last week and he said they were all passing around a book called Candid Confessions. It is some adventure story about a guy who travels around the world. I got an extra copy coming to him because he couldn't get it from another inmate. Just an idea if your searching for a title.

I sent one of my PPs 'The Quantum Universe' by Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw because I was reading it myself and recommend it everyone. I sent another PP 'Love All The People' which contains a lot of Bill Hicks' material - that guy was a total legend!

Something I noticed on the Texas Bookstore site is that you can also send blank journals. I would recommend that if you can, send a PP one of these, because sometimes paper is at a premium in prison. You can send writing paper and envelopes too, which are always welcome, but to just have a notebook, to record lists, thoughts, keep a diary etc. I know it doesn't fall under the 'Books to Read' remit, but it's also something worth considering if you are in a position to send a little something your PP's way.

I'm thinking about sending to my two favorites PP "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho.

Just read a book about Bruce Ismay: the owner of
the ship Titanic who was one of the first class men
to jump on a life boat. (leaving women and children
to die)

Then to always live his life in shame.

I sent one of my guys this book. I haven't read it myself but I've read lots of great reviews and the quotes I did read are hilarious. If your pen pal could use a laugh, try this.

There are lots of books that are popular in jail, 48 Laws of Power is one by Rob Green, the Law of Seduction, 50 Cent's new book in conjunction with Robert Green called the 50th Law of Power, BMF - the Rise and Fall of Big Meech, a dictionary believe it or not is ordered frequently, Think and Grow Rich is a powerful book as well, great for shifting mindset. Get ideas from the book catalogue and also order and have books shipped for you at Inmate Care Packages - Shopping for and Supporting Incarcerated People - UpNorth Services - This is a site that helps the families of those that are incarcerated by having food/clothing/books/music in one place. I just sent my PP "The Shack" it's an incredibly beautiful fictional story...that uses biblical theology to tell the story of God's love in a really kick ass way. Sorry for my unrefined description :D But it's such an INCREDIBLE story!

I was supposed to read this with J. I sent it to him and then I got busy and it got pushed to the back burner. I am going to read it so we can discuss it, but it wasn't his favorite. My mom is obsessed with it and I've heard a lot of good things though.

sh*tmydadsays is snort worthy!

I find that many men have an appreciation for the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice

If you or your pps are interested in spirituality vs religion, or are simply looking for a good thought provoking read, the book God Without Religion by Sankara Saranam is fantastic! It is all about how to better yourself and those around you by rejecting practices that cause division in humanity. It has a definite anti-organized religion bias, but the ideas of inner peace translating to outer peace, understanding of the universality of the human condition, and the realization that at the end all of us are just people is wonderful. Especially in prison where there is so much racial tension... I took a gamble and sent it to TT (who is definitely trying to get some inner peace) and it was really well received.

Goodness knows that my copy has circled the rounds of my friends and co-workers, and has collected lots of highlighter marks and notes in the margins. I like to call it a 'well loved' book. ;)

They can only receive books from publishers.

Can they get books off amazon that are used? I can't find that one new =S

A great book for inmates who have been in prison for a long time, or spent years in confinement....In the Belly of the Beast. It's written by an inmate who spent decades in prison (and solitary). He was quite controversial and was "penpals" with the author Norman Mailor who wrote the introduction of the book. He also helped get him parolled. Shortly after his release on parole he killed a couple of people and went back to prison (if I recall correctly he was sentenced to death).

Anyway, for any inmates into the pschology of the toxic prison environment, it's a great book.

That was what i was thinking, i asked him what kind off books do you like, and its all about the outside world, mountainman, cowboys and indians, world war 2

Does anyone not think that we should send our PPs any othr kind of book rather than ones about prison and/or crime? Just wondering because well getting 'stuck into' a good book may take them away from the mundane dreariness they live already....what do u think?

Penelope Write

You should try reading The Struggle: Momma's Story by Penelope Write. It's a Hot Urban Non-Fiction Title that is based on the life of a female youth named Cassey Jenkins. Ever since the age of 12, she was forced to live on her own throughout the streets of Chicago. Later she became a teen parent who desired nothing more than to live the lavish life of luxury. In pursuit of fulfilling this desire she met a man named Bop. They hit it off well because like him she was inspired to achieve a life of success. So, he presented her with the opportunity to establish a partnership; she accepts.

As planned their business was operating as well as to be expected. Unfortunately, on Christmas Eve Cassey became the victim of an attempted murder within the City of Chicago. As a result of the incident she was physically disabled and uniquely disfigured. Through GOD’s grace, not only did she survive the attack, she defeated the lengthy rehabilitation process and earned her right to be acknowledged as an ‘Ultimate Survivor…’

If I want to send a book, do I have to do it directly from the publisher/bookstore? Like I can't go to Chapters and buy a book and mail it myself, or can I?

Depends on the prison... One pp I can send him books myself, the other I have to go by a preferred vendor, Amazon.

LETxGO

Can they get books off amazon that are used? I can't find that one new =S

nope (unfortunately) because used books come from individual sellers instead of amazon directly!!

Maybe it's this one ? Candid confessions from P.MAHER

This book chronicles the life of Jack, a disturbed man who travels through Asia as an English teacher. The story carries the reader to Japan, Korea, Thailand, Laos, and Burma. All the while, Jack seeks meaning to his lonesome life but he searches in all the wrong places. Written in the same narrative fashion as many Russian classics, Candid Confessions is a refreshing dark story set in a modern age.
