I do not have a penpal who uses Corrlinks, but I do have a penpal who uses Jpay. I know what you can do with Jpay, you can't only send your letters fast, you also can send money and have video calls. But what can corrlinks do? Does it have similar tools or can you only use it for email?

@sk8erplayer, maybe you can send the girl an email letting her know?

Hello, I have a question. My son is in a Texas prison. He received an email via Jpay from a person in New Zealand. He would like to write her back. In her Jpay she did not leave an address where he could write to her. He is only allowed to receive Jpay but not send one. I'm not sure if she knew this. But my question is.... Does anyone know how he could respond to her letter? Any ideas would be helpful, thank you.

Exactly my point, you are sending them money as a gift and you cannot tell them what it must be used for. You can ask, and you can hope, but frankly if its a choice between sending an email and buying hygiene products, I know what I'd choose.

Umm...no your wrong. When you specifically tell an inmate to use the money for email because they are telling you that they prefer to talk via email that is what the money should be used for. So basically your saying that if I send money and SPECIFICALLY tell them to use use it for email they have the right to ignore my demands and use it for whatever they want? That is deception and dishonest and I would never trust anyone like that. It's not my job to supply them with daily needs unless I desire to. Money is only sent as a gift if you make it clear to them that it is a gift. I think you are seriously confused.

A gift is something you give to somebody to do with as they please. When you send someone money and tell them it's specifically to be used for Corrlinks communication you have no idea what they are using it for.

If you give someone a gift, you have no control of what they do with that gift, and nor should you. Gifts don't come with strings attached.

Access Corrections is a nice way to email because you can deposit how much money you want to buy credits and every letter or photo costs a certain # of credits. There is now way the inmate can abuse the system because you share credits and you will know because every time they write a letter a certain amount of credits will used. Corrlinks sucks because you have to trust these inmates and most women will attempt to lure and abuse your generosity.

is there a jpay kiosk in halfway houses?

More proof Corrlinks is used as a scam. Offered my inmate to pay for a book of stamps, paper and pens and she said she only wanted to use Corrlinks. I told her that using postal mail we can write much longer letters, no time period and only 6 days to get to and from and she didn't go for it. Told her I wanted to have "real" conversations which you can't have using Corrlnks unless your willing to spend an extremely large amount of money. I'm pretty sure these inmates are not even using the money that you send them for email but either spending some of it at the Com or emailing other people because $30.00 in Corrlinks didn't even last 2 weeks and we were only sending short mails once per day. Guys. You want to test if a female inmate really wants to talk to you as a pen pal? Tell them you will buy them a certain # of stamps, pen and paper and see if they write you. I told her if you REALLY thought I was interesting like you said then writing once a week on the weekend should be no big deal. Otherwise you risk being used by these parasites and losing tons of money.

I think Corrlinks is a scam or at the very least can easily be abused by inmates. When you send money via western union for them to use for Corrlinks you have no idea if they are using it all for emails or using some of the money for other things. For that matter I prefer postal mail because you know what they are using the money for if you don't get any letters from them. Not sure JPAY works but Corrlinks is a a risk not to mention expensive.

KS inmates have videochat? Is that the same as a video visit?

At his facility it's just a video message that the free-world person can record and send to their inmate

From what I am understanding about it, Some versions of JPay, Are like Skype to us on the outside. I've never used it before though. Sorry I can't be of more help.

That's true Driver... my NC and IL PPs I can only send money via JPay, but my KS PP I can send money, email, and videochat.

JPay varies by privilege level. Some institutions have jpay centers in them and they can send/receive emails etc. Other JPay is used only to put money on the inmates books.
You can always look up the inmate number and find out exactly what you can and can not do as far as sending emails etc.
Whereas corrlinks is used primarily for just emails.

GREAT detail. Thank You!

It's my understanding that what you can do with Jpay varies by state and, if I'm not mistaken, even by institution. Some you can just send money. Others have a wider array of options.

WaterLily

With Corrlinks the inmate you are writing can send you money using moneygram from his/her inmate account. I don't know if that option is available on jpay because i don't use jpay

Thank you :)

I love jpay because it cost me $5 for 25 Stamps and in Australia it cost me $3.60 for one stamp so it works out way better! But I miss the personal touch of handwritten letters so still do that for pictures etc :)

Corrlinks is great for me for sending short messages and occasional full replies to my MN pal because they just print it out for him. It doesn't cost him anything, as far as I'm aware, and it's a lot quicker and cheaper for me than writing a letter. I don't use it exclusively though, because I like the personal touch of handwritten letters, but it's really handy if I want to just send a really quick message, or if I've got too much on to sit down and write a long letter by hand.

The cost (30 cents I think) is amazing for the amount you can send, especially as I'm so used to it costing 25 cents to send 300 character messages via Telmate/GettingOut... that ends up getting quite expensive, especially for my pal considering his wages - we're having to cut back on using it so much to be honest. So yeah, Corrlinks is pretty good value for what you get, at least for me. If my pal was paying by the minute to use it, I'd probably have different feelings.

I've not had any experience with Jpay.

:thx:

I was thinking Corrlinks was some kind of magical programme after I heard the stories on the forum, but I guess I can be happy with Jpay. 5ct per minute, pff...thats sounds very expensive.

I like exchange short messages in a short period of time more than a long letters every 3 weeks, but I have no choice with my penpal in Texas. The day inmates in Texas can send emails is the day I will throw a party and walk polonaise all day long!!

DanPal

Yes, the printouts of your attachments are in black-and-white. And pretty dark too, I'm told :(

It IS free for the inmate. You buy cyber stamps and use those as payment as you go.

It is indeed faster and a great addition to regular snail mail, as it's delivered within 48 hours of you sending it.

Stepralston

With jpay are the photos just black and white? That's what I've heard and also is it completely free for the prisoner? I sent my second letter via jpay as my pp said it would be faster for him to recieve and he will get it the following day then reply via american post which is great rather than waiting weeks either way!

Just curious on the basics :) this thread is helpful!

Tanya369

Corrlinks you can only use for email. NO attachments or any other fancy features lol. And yeah costs them money too.
I'm not complaining too much as its better then the alternative (snail mail ) but it would be nice to be able to send a photo or two real time and to send my guy a bit of cash now and then. All seems a lot easier with Jpay.

My Ohio pal has Jpay, we exchange daily emails, I can send him pictures and get video visits, My cowboy has corrlinks and we can only exchange emails and they cost him 5c a minute to read and respond.....presonally I prefer Jpay! :)
