I have done a personal study after being scammed last year by a "Gay" prisoner. After going through that ordeal I learned a lot and wanted to see if there truly was any genuine gay men. While I'm sure there are I'm here to tell you all that I have taken it upon myself to write numerous "Gay" inmates in KY at the same time just to see if the scams correlated and they DO! All you should do honestly before writing a guy is Facebook search them. You will more than likely find out they are not gay and usually have kids and baby mamas waiting for them on the outside. GAY FOR THE STAY AND STRAIGHT AT THE GATE! DON'T BE FOOLED. FOOL THEM AND DON'T WRITE ANY OF THESE GAY PRISONERS. ESPECIALLY IN KENTUCKY. I've tried a few inmates from other states and It's a similar scam but IT'S VERY CONCENTRATED IN KENTUCKY. THE INMATES KNOW THEY CAN PREY ON THE GAYS SO PLEASE TAKE MY ADVICE AND JUST STICK TO DATING IN THE FREE WORLD. THESE GUYS ARE INCARCERATED FOR A REASON! LET THEM PAY THEIR DUES TO SOCIETY! AND IF YOU DECIDE TO GO AHEAD AND WRITE SOMEONE ANYWAYS. DO YOUR RESEARCH AND DEFINATELY SEARCH THEM ON FACEBOOK!!!! AND THEY WILL SAY THEY DON'T HAVE MONEY FOR FOOD AND ALL KIND OF SOB STORIES TO GET $$ LOL PLEASE DONT BE STUPID !

Hi there.  Does anyone remember writing to a Kyle Cobb in Kentucky. He claimed to be gay.

Hey Hubert ! I know what you mean ! As long as people are informed and not gullible nothing can go wrong. And I'm pretty sure that the inmates running this scam must be pretty clever and only responding to letters of people who they feel are easily manipulated. Out of the three guys I'm corresponding with only one seems genuine and interesting and, not suprisingly, he's straight. The second guy who is "gay" seems ok, but I'm pretty sure it'll fade out pretty soon ; as for the third guy, it's too soon to tell. In any case, one must be careful NOT to fall into a trap, cos there are apparently quite a few inmates, male or female, looking to scam people (and giving a bad reputation to the ones who really wish to correspond with free people)...

hey guys!

same here! i live in europe and wrote 5 guys, only one of them answered. he seemed to really be looking for someone to write with. but who knows if he asks for anything in his 2. letter. he wrote me that it would be faster to communicate via email because it doesn´t take as long as snail mail, but that would be fine with him if we stick to snail mail. i did a little reseach on the guys i wrote. i don´t really think that a scam could harm me, because i´m not willing to send money, maybe a book or two, but that won´t kill me financially.

If you believe there's a scam going on, contact the WriteAPrisoner staff and denounce it. Writing on the forum has very real impact on scams, if that's really true.

Hey, Christian36 !

That's my point of view as well, I'm a (gay) guy and would much rather correspond with men than with women.

I have written on the subject of "gay" scammers elsewhere :

https://writeaprisoner.com/prison-forum/general-prison-talk/gay-inmate-…

It's difficult to decide what to make out of these profiles. Most of them are probably fake, but what of the real ones ? They have to suffer the consequence of their fellow prisoners' scam...

As for me, I wrote quite a few of these guys without giving too much attention to the fact that they were in Kentucky and a few straight guys, after checking that they were willing to write to men as well. So far, I only got a reply from a straight guy who's cool and just today, I got a reply from one of the gay inmates in Kentucky.

I had sent him my letter end of August and he couldn't reply because he had no stamps. He didn't ask for any money or tell me any sob story, but he mentionned that I could send him money through Jpay, in passing. Granted, it was in answer to my question about stationery (whether he could be sent stationery or stamps). He seems genuine and I think he must be telling the truth. He did mention that he hopes to meet a nice guy when he's released, but that didn't seem to me to be an invitation for me to become his sugar daddy LOL. We'll see how that goes. Even though I think he's genuine, the whole Kentucky scam has made me wary and it'll take some time for me to trust that second penpal.

Keep us posted about what you do !

Hi Shawno92 and Thucy82

I am new on WriteAPrisoner and haven't written to anyone yet, but I began by reading a lot of the forum posts. The typical pattern - so it seems to me - is that the male inmates typically want to write with women and the female inmates with men. I would like to write to a male inmate, and I have gone through the gay profiles, not because I specifically want to discuss gay issues, but there might be a better chance to get a reply.

But like you guys I sincerely doubted the honesty of many of these Kentucky area profiles. I also got the idea of checking their Facebook sites, and when you find out that they have two-three kids plus an on-and-off wife, and that their primary interests are fishing, hunting, camping and watching sports, then you wonder. They don't even try to enhance the credibility of their prisoner profiles by adding some more "gayish" interests. Excuse me for sounding stereotypical, but you know what i mean. Of course everybody has the right to define themselves, and some of them could  - theoretically - be closeted gays, who have been spending their whole life pretending, and first now can live their lives to the fullest in prison.

Or that is perhaps, what they want the real gay men to believe...

Hey, Shawno92 !

I did the same mistake ; wrote to a couple of "gay" inmates, as I'd much rather correspond with gay than straight men, but, thankfully, none of them replied (perhaps due to the fact that I'm in Europe and they thought it would be complicated to ask for money ?).

The only guy who replied is the only straight guy I wrote to and is very nice.

Kelray, it's not about dating... Writing to women doesn't really interest me and I would rather correspond with gay guys with whom I can share some things ; but since I've wasted so much time writing to "gay" prisoners, I will be choosing straight guys from now on.

I don't know why anyone would turn to WriteAPrisoner to date.    2ndly:  why would you send money?  There are no prison inmates without sustenance from the state while they are guests at the facility.  There's a saying "Fool me once shame on you.  Fool me twice shame on me."  Just use your common sense and don't look to an inmate to have a serious romantic reltionship with.  There are millions of  candidates in the free world.  Why start out on shaky ground?
