I was able to find your son by his MDOC number and then was able to find him on write a prisoner, so you did everything right. I’m not sure why he didn’t receive mail yet, but I do know that you can have your son put on the “inmates not receiving mail list” and maybe he’ll get someone to write him. He seems to be a nice guy so I’m not sure what the problem is. I would write him if I could, but I honestly have my hands full with pen pals already.

Yes Kirsten, you’re absolutely right. I was just mentioning that so it won’t be excluded cause it was stated that inmates can reply through snail mail only and not by email, which is also not correct.

Prisoners can reply by email too, for instance corrlinks or Jpay. With both of my pps I write on there, no need for snail mail.

Hi,
I've got two slight corrections on this very thorough and thoughtful explanation, if you don't mind:
Regarding point 1) You don't have to be registered to be able to look at inmate profiles. So, if you feel like wanting to write somebody, go ahead. You'll only have to register if you want to post on the forums.
Regarding point 3) You do NOT have to both be signed up to one of the mentioned services. That's wrong.
Jpay in TX is available for you, but not for the inmates. They'll have to get back to you per snailmail (i.e. letters), but you can write messages to them. They get them printed and delivered like letters on regular mail call. Note addendem: I don't know whether this is true for TX Death Row as well, but for the other state prisons it works, while international calls from TX are unavailable. (Don't try to get around it, please, as you may stir up a LOT of trouble for your penpal, yourself and others. Please, THINK before acting. I'm fed up with suffering the consequences of that kind of stuff, by getting stricter and stricter rules caused by that thoughtlessness.)
To the rest +1 to everything mjuran said.

Thelovelykayla: this is not the place to exchange or invite messages with prisoners. They cannot see what you write here. This is the place to talk to other non-prisoners who are writing to prisoners, in case you need help writing to prisoners.

There seems to be some confusion here about posting in the forum here, vs. the actual writing-to-prisoners correspondence. The forum is for non-prisoners to post questions and answers about the logistics of the Write-a-Prisoner program and how to get started, and other related matters. There are no prisoners on the forums, they don't have access to this web site.
Most of the information people are seeking here can be found in the FAQ section, the Terms of Service section, or by reading previously answered posts on the forums. Look for your specific question to see if it has already been answered. Because it is admittedly not crystal clear how this works, initially, let me give a broad overview. If you want to write to a prisoner,
1. Register with Write-A-Prisoner
2. Find a prisoner you'd like to write to, by reading the prisoner profiles that are posted here under "Prisoner Profiles". Note their prisoner ID number, as well as their name and the mailing address of the facility where they are incarcerated. This information is given in the box on the lower left of the profile page, after the text of the prisoner's message (along with other information).
3. Write to the prisoner. There are three ways to do this: Writing via WAP, writing a snail-mail directly to the prisoner using the information above, or writing an electronic mail message through a service like JPay, if available to that particular inmate. If you choose to write through WAP, you do it on this site (link is on the inmate's profile), your message will be printed out and delivered to the inmate along with regular mail. You can only write once per inmate through WAP, for the introductory letter. After that, you and the inmate have to agree on one of the other methods of mailing or emailing. Inmates do not actually have "email" as we know it, instead, there are services (like JPay, Jmail, and others) that allow them to send an electronic message to you, at a certain cost per page. You both have to be signed up to such a service, which is totally separate from WAP, in order to correspond this way; otherwise, you use old fashioned letters through the postal service. This always works.
4. Wait for the inmate to reply. Make sure you have included your mailing address (whatever address you want the prisoner to write you back at) in your initial letter to them. WAP does not include the information automatically, it has to be in the body of your text letter, or on the envelope you mail as your return address. If the inmate can't see your return address, he/she won't be able to respond back to you.
5. Keep doing this until you find someone you like as a pen pal.
If you are trying to use the forum to understand what to do, it is better to ask a specific question you are stuck on rather than post something like "can someone explain how this works?"
Hope this helps.

Er, guys...this is not a dating site for forum users to message each other and hook up. If you want to write to a prisoner, write to a prisoner. (Use the "Prisoner profile" tab, select someone you'd like to write to, and either use WAP for your introductory letter which they print out and give to the inmate, for the initial contact ONLY, or write them a letter the old fashioned way, correctly addressed to the inmate with their name and prisoner number on the first line, then the mailing address of the institution below; always include your mailing address when you write to them, as otherwise they will not be able to write you back.) If you want to write to each other and invite each other to contact you, admire each other's profile photos, or whatever, I'm not sure what that has to do with writing prisoners and it's clogging up the forums, which are for specific questions and answers about how this works.

Hi Podlisak73, how many letters have you written and not gotten a response to? Responses can take a little while, and not everyone will respond, but if you are patient and keep trying, someone should respond. Are you putting your mailing address in your emails? Prisoners can't reply by email, they can only write letters the old fashioned way (for which they need your address) or through JPay emails, if they have stamps for it. Always include your mailing address in your introductory letter, so they have a way to contact you back.

Erik, you're never going to be completely sure, if things will work out with someone or not, neither in-, nor outside.
Take it slow, don't jump in easily (how long do you write? Did you phone or meet in person already?) and just take time for things to develop.
