Hey guys,

is it possible to write a prisoner a letter who is "not in BOP Custody" and marked as "currently in transit" on bop.gov? Right now he is incarcerated in the California State Prison, Corcoran. Or at least that is what the CDCR inmate locator says.

I just got more information: He went from San Quentin to Corcoran due to health issues a few years ago. Obviously he is doing better now and this is why they take him back to San Quentin.

I see. Then I am going to write him soon without being worried. I've said that before here but I am so glad to be a member of this community. You guys are so friendly and helpful. God bless you!

By the way, you made me laugh with the (lemme call it) " positive side effects" of being married to a man who is LWOP.  Maybe I should do the same? j/k

The good news is he's going from one state facility to another state facility. The only time a Federal prisonor gets tossed out of their system is when a state prison who accepts federal money is forced to take them. I must have misread something above. State prison systems seem to take a little while entering their information into their databanks. His inmate ID number won't change, so you won't need to worry about this at all.

I'm far from an expert myself, I rely on the nice people here on the WAP forum to help me out all the time, and my husband. Besides, who wants to be that person at the party full of useless and useful prison facts? Don't ever be afraid to ask a question, and I've never heard a stupid question yet in my life.

Yes, you will have to wait to visit him until he's processed, and they may or may not have a 30 day waiting period. The state approval process is pretty easy.

The upside of marrying a man who is LWOP is I get the remote all to myself and no one to wake me up with their snoring. I might be onto something here for all of us ladies.

Just seen....it's also impossible to visit him: " ........ is currently in transit and visiting hours are not available."

First of all I am sorry to hear that your husband is serving LWOP, I can imagine how difficult it must be for you and your family. The person I am talking about will be transferred to San Quentin, I suppose. But I am not 100% sure. Is that from Federal to State? Sorry for the stupid question, I am far away from being an expert when it comes to things like that.

I'm not sure which is the best advice, wait for him to reach his destination, maybe? It could take some time for his mail to catch up to him. If he's going from the Federal system to the State, his inmate number will change as well. If he's just going from one Fed institution his number will remain the same. If he stays in the Fed system he will be easy to locate as they tend to update rather quickly. If he's transferred to a State facility that could be a bit tricky. When my husband was kicked out of the Feds (He's serving LWOP) under his State number it showed him in Cinn at a half way house for 5 years.

Okay! Thank you!

Sounds like a Federal to State transfer. If the CDCR says he's in Corcoran, use the CA address. Happy writing!
