Hey everyone.

So I've wanted to do this for such a long time now, but the old school way. I want to write and receive hand written letters to an inmate. I've read some instructions and I understand I must include my return address, my question is... do the inmates see this? I may be overreacting and I bit paranoid but I need to know what I'm doing is safe.

Thanks heaps!

Thanks for that! Yeah the fires are horrendous.. I'm a little further north than where they are but it's so devestating to see.

Wow that's awesome! I've wanted to write to one for so long.. when people ask me why I don't really have an answer though? I guess I'm hoping to brighten their time in there and make them feel like there's something to look forward to or something idk..

Have you ever used JPay before?

Thanks heaps for answering my questions btw haha

Ah yeah, then I wouldn't worry too much about them having your address. Australia is notoriously hard for ex-cons to even visit. Though that might be a downfall much later if it goes better than expected haha.
hope where you are you aren't being too effected by the fires, such horrible stuff.
I'm about to be 32 this year, and I have been writing to several prisoners since I was 19, though I usually only ever have one at a time. So just one for a few years until circumstances change or we fall out of touch. I just wrote a letter to a new potential PP so I'm hoping I get a reply back sometime soon.

Thanks so much for responding! I'm located in Australia, so I guess my return address doesn't matter does it? PO boxes in Australia are SO expensive - I've thought about that! How long have you been writing to a prisoner for? I'm so excited to send my first letter!

Great that you're taking the first step in writing! And good that you've read some of the forum threads, there's a lot of good information on here.
For your question, yes you have to write your return address on the envelope and a good idea to write it in first letter too. Yes, your pen pal will see your address and have it so they can address their letters to you.
The safety part... I don't live in America where my pen pals are so that's easier done for me. If you live in America and are worried about safety then the only thing I could suggest is pick a PP that's not in your state or surrounding states?  Or you could get a PO Box but I think (in New Zealand and America) they're rather pricey. Up to you!
Happy Writing!
