Im scared to my core here and really need some feedback. Just got of the phone with my dear friend, he was crying so hard he could barely talk, and he said him and several others are being moved from Protective Custody to a high securety prison because some of them got a fever and the warden feears it is Coronavirus. Can they do this?? And what is the point of moving them to another prison?? Er are talking about a virus here, not something that go away if they are moved!! My friend could get killed if certain inmates gets to him, after all thats why he is in PC! Same goes for several of the others. I have gotten pretty good at staying calm and exepting all the bad these people have to endure but with this I cant stay calm. Please help me understand this.

I talked to my brother yesterday and he told me the same thing happened where he is at. They took two inmates an pretty much put them on lock down. They can't even come out of their cells and no other inmates can go near them. I guess this is their way to control it

Hi there mein Teil (still love that nick, great idea),

every max prison I had guys to write to in had areas to seperate ppl, be it for ad seg or protective custody. Probably the new facility has a special space to quarantine those who show symptoms or who got a positive test. If he and those who are transferred caught a fever it might be safer for them that way, plus being able to stop the virus from spreading.

I hope they got enough testkits to test the ppl involved!

I don’t know what to tell you, Mein Teil, though my friend in a high-security facility mentioned on the phone last week that in his experience (coronavirus notwithstanding) if someone was found to be ill with something contagious, the standard move is quarantine. Maybe your friend’s initial facility isn’t set up for that as well as the new facility? I hope that’s what’s behind it – to keep everyone safe, especially your friend.

It sounds to me like the Warden is trying to move everyone out who is healthy. This could be to limit the spread of the virus and possibly take anyone in who is positive for it. Better to have everyone who is sick under one roof. I honestly don't know. Was your friend in that prison previously and then moved to another location for PC? Maximum security prisons have areas that are designated for PC. I'll keep you and your friend in my thoughts. It's such a time of uncertainty.

They can definitely move people.  I think PC is something people request so maybe they have it available at the new facility he is moving into.  Also if he has a fever perhaps they will separate him into a medical building. I'm sorry to hear about your friend struggling, Mein.  I hope he'll be okay.  He's lucky to have your support!

Idk if this applies on your situation, but one of my pen pals is being moved too. He is going from a low-medium security prison to a medium-high one. He said that it sometimes happens after a while,so you won't get too comfortable.

Maybe your pen pal can inform his lawyer or case worker?

This is unchartered territory for all of us - I don't think any of us have the answers to anything. The prison system changes rules and regulations at a whim even before this pandemic.
As for your friend, I'm very sorry to hear how it's upsetting you both. It seems counterintuitive to move people from one place to another since that seems to make the rate of infection speed up. However, perhaps the high security prison has single cells for your friend, or less people in cells or secure units for those that are PC inmates. It's best not to worry about it until it happens and you know what's going on.
My gut feeling would be that they wouldn't put them in danger, but like I said before, I don't know anything really.
It's uncertain times and there's lots of stuff that's happening that's never been done before.
I'm sorry I can't give you anymore clarity on your question but I hope you and your loved one stay safe x
