I sent a letter through Jpay like two days ago. And when I check sent email it says it will appear once the facility will have approved it. So like I'm wondering on average how long does it take for them to approve and give the letter to the inmate. Anyone has had any similar experiences. My pp is in Ironwood state prison. Since this is my first time I'm so impatient :(

Omg thank you so much. You really reassured me. I thought that maybe the letter got rejected by the prison workers or something. Yeh I guess with the pandemic it could get hectic. Looked up the cases at that specific prison and it's quite concerning.

Hello Zoo Zoo,

Impatience isn't a good quality for a pen pal to those incarcerated, patience is needed in buckets :)

There isn't an average time for messages since there is so many factors that affect it. Some general JPay rules of thumb are: if the message is shorter, it will be read & approved faster. Longer letter length Jpays can sometimes take up to a week or maybe longer to be approved. Another is if you want to send a photo via JPay then most people recommend sending the letter & photo separately so it goes a little quicker, as photos tend to slow things down some more. Some prisons don't deliver mail on weekends (Federal prisons hand out mail Mon-Fri) and therefore messages sent in the weekend take longer to be approved but that is facility dependant. Then there's a whole host of other things that can affect the time it takes to get to your pen pal, like how well staffed the mail room is, if it's a busier than normal holiday period like Christmas & New Year, or if you're in a pandemic. And many more can slow it down too. These are just the ones that come to mind straight away.
In short, be patient :) it will usually always take longer than you want it to - and that's another quote from a fellow forum user.
