Thx, I started watching and just from seeing these small cells I feel I can't breath any more. At least all these monks and grizzlies could be thankful to be allowed to reading books and writing letters... Nice they let them doing this. Horrible, really...

Freebird, firstly I never said you have no idea. Secondly, if you don't need people's input I suggest not writing stuff on this forum. Had't you made your own because you don't like this one?

@Selosa,  much as I respect your opinions, you have no idea what I know about such things, so making assumptions and believing I have no idea is presumptious. I do my research thoroughly, and get first hand information from the person I write to incarcerated at supermax, so don't really think I need your input. But thanks anyway

Nic you are right. Many people get mental problems in solitary. After a while they start talking to themselves, yell, bang their heads, start throwing feces on the walls and co's. After all even negative attention is better than no human interaction right?

Yet, the origin of solitary confinement was well-meant. The Quakers introduced it in the 19th century as a substitution for public punishing and physical torture. The idea was that if prisoners would live like monks, they would contemplate their behavior and repent...

Nic, better let go of the illusion that the US prison system is about rehabilitation in the western European/scandinavian sense. It's not. It's a revenge-based, public outcry of fear driven system that comes out of the 18th century and is basically driven by a sense of distrust, religious fundamentalism and a non- understanding of grizzly bears. ;-)

Anyway good luck and happy writing,

(and beware of the grizzlies!) ;-)

Getting closer into this topic it is really difficult to imagine how someone can survive this without suffering on any kind of mental deseas after. Especially regarding the fact that some prisoners have to stay there for so long time... Horrible...

I guess the goal at the end for those coming out again should be to help them getting member of the society again... How should this work treating them like this? I am quite sure some of them might get out from there worse than they been before. Of course there are dangerous people, sure. But in my opinion that's not the right way to make anything better.

@Selosa.....racism thrives in just about every facility in the USA..... and considering there are less that 500 inmates housed at supermax according to the latest figures, and everyone is kept in single individual cells 23hrs a day, with all meals delivered to cells, and any recreaction taken alone...I hardly think racism is the sole reason they are there.

I don't know if there is much difference between Death Row and Supermax. I know for sure there is much difference between DR and general prison and I can imagine DR and supermax having the same kind of regime. So I'll explain to you about DR for you to get an impression of this regime. Of course, this differs per state. I only know about the situation in California.

The biggest difference is that on DR there is no possibility to work or to learn a trade or so. They spent a lot of time in their cell on their own, although my pp has told me that some days would be very busy for him, with yard time, counseling, and shower time. Every time they are taken out of their cell they have to undress and do this very humiliating thing of spreading their butt cheeks and cough. They are always shackled and handcuffed and they are put in cages in the hallway if they're a bit early for an appointment. Like Freebird mentioned, there is only snail-mail available. They eat in their cells. There is no touching possible during visiting hours. That is all for now that I can think of.

To be fair, my pp is now in jail, awaiting a new trial and that is a lot worse than DR, he tells me. He has been put in 'the hole' and he writes there are all kinds of crazy persons there, throwing their feces, urine, blood around and screaming night and day. He is used to screaming, but this seems to be worse. There is absolutely nothing to do for him, he cannot even go outside. I hope his lawyer will address this situation soon, as my pp is not violent and doesn't belong there at all. Not that a single person belongs there, that is not what I mean.

Thanks for responding my question. Freebird you are right I guess... It does not make any difference. Maybe just been thinking too much.

Anyway, it really takes very long time to receiving letters! And those days even longer...

Selosa

Freebird have you heard of something called racism?

freebird1

Incidentally, why do you think him being native american is why he has been there so long? Supermax is all about the severity and risk factors of individuals, rather than culture or ethnicity.

freebird1

Yes, I write someone in supermax. The only difference in terms of corrrespondence is it will be postal letters only, and might take longer than other places to be received both ways.

Hi Nic, good on you for writing! One of my buds is heading over to the ADX/Supermax any day now, and knock me over with a feather, he said he’s looking forward to it. Now, the feds have been shuttling him around from one place to another for years (typical feds thing), where it's politics and bullshit and dirty cops inventing "incidents" out of thin air, and then pinning them on him. He says he's looking forward to the peace and quiet. (!!!)

Out of my whole crew, he's the Rhodes Scholar - like, he'd be university professor material under different circumstances... and an ace at crossword puzzles. I'm stocking-up on ones from The New York Times, to get to him over time during his stay there.

I can't wrap my brain around it, but FOUR of my buds who've endured the SMU program at USP Thomson have all told me, independently and unprompted, that they'd have preferred the ADX to that. Go figure. Maybe it's the one-man cells? (The feds are otherwise universally two to a cell, unless it's a low, where it's a dorm kind of thing.) Whenever my buds get a place to themselves due to cellies being transferred or whatnot, they're on cloud nine - running around nekkid and dancing to their MP3 players! So, does the freedom of a bachelor pad outweigh the other stuff? Hell if I know... but the absence of close-quarters politics seems to be attractive. Or maybe it's the nude beach thing. Or dancing with no one to judge...

But the ADX is said to be very harsh time, a sensory deprivation tank, and I’d be interested in what others with pen pals there would have to say too.

touched me in a way... as u see technical and psycholochical problems ;) Anyway, I felt myself TOUCHED and I ever felt myself close to Indian culture. He is Native American. And I guess that's one reason why they let ihm stay so long there.
Anyone to share experiences with me??
Thx :*
