I Understand
11/11/2022

As I was growing up

Dad wasn’t much for fun

He was always so serious

His discipline always stern

Vacations he rarely took

Work and bills stole his time

But give a fishing pole

And he’d come back just fine

            Dad let’s go to town

            Maybe catch a show

Let’s get away from this place

Dad, I’ve just got to go

            Son, there’s nothing in town

All we need is on this land

I know you don’t see it

            Son, one day you’ll understand

He always worked so hard

Never wanted for much

Just a little piece of land

A john boat, tractor and such

The simple satisfied him

Peaceful and quiet was his song

A bigger bobbin’ on the bayou

He could do that all day long

            Dad let’s go to town

            Maybe catch a show

Let’s get away from this place

Dad, I’ve just got to go

            Son, there’s nothing in town

All we need is on this land

I know you don’t see it

            Son, one day you’ll understand

I’ve been away from home

For oh so many years

Memories of that place

Most often bring tears

There’s nothing more I need

Than that little piece of land

To wrap my arms around his neck

And say, “Dad, I understand.”
