Meet Son:

Despite what you may believe, prisoners are human and have a life story just like everyone else. But the question remains: will you stop long enough to hear their story?

Somewhere in my life journey, I slipped through the cracks of society and found myself languishing on Texas’ death row. I spent years alone in the shadows of the executor’s blade, where death looms closer each passing day. Yet, in my sufferings and hopeless existence, I discovered a strength within myself to persevere. This torch of hope burned away the darkness surrounding me. This optimist outlook paved the way for my future.

In 2005, the Supreme Court banned juvenile execution, which spared my life. Now, I've emerged from the pit of man’s hell with all the reasons to live. But who am I today?

Hello, my name is Son Tran, and I am Vietnamese. Despite over two decades of incarceration, I still smile easily and possess a positive attitude toward life. I enjoy training in the martial arts and Tai chi exercises. I love to read books of all genres from authors such as George R.R. Martin to Alexandre Dumas.

Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Ministry, which is demanding but worthwhile. When not challenging my capacity to learn, I am pursuing other areas of interest: Eastern Philosophy (Taoism), drawing, the Spanish language, and writing - which gives life to my thoughts.

despite my good nature, prison still causes the ugly PED of negativity to rise within me. in such moments I feel overwhelmed with the sense of being alone. even in the world I know people feel the same way. in these times of need, friends make all the difference.

With that said, I seek to establish sincere and lasting friendships by sharing life experiences. I am open to correspond with people in the states and abroad, anyone who is looking for a good friend. In the world, or in prison, life is better with friends.

Sincerely,

Son Tran DOC number is listed below
