BACK TO THE SAME OLD ME  (POEM)

BACK TO THE SAME OLD ME  (POEM)

Sitting in my cell, confused and broken-hearted,
Thinking how I got here and how this all started.
This will be the deepest thing that I ever wrote,
Small steps into giant, that’s my favorite quote.
They say a champion is born everyday,
If that’s true then I was born yesterday.
I know I can never change the past
But it won’t stop me from the righteous path.
So I’m coming back stronger and better,
No more sending my love through a letter.
I’ve been through hell, yet now on my knees
I pray that I don’t go back to the same old me.

Time is of the essence so today I got a plan,
System tried to break me but it didn’t know this man.
Loneliness and boredom and max security,
Still got educated, diploma - masonry.
Seen a lot of things a man ain’t supposed to see,
In street smarts I earned a Master’s and a Ph.D.
Saw death, hopelessness, and lots of misery,
But it all ends if I don’t go back to the same old me.

I was addicted to the fast life surrounded by frenemies,
But the shadow on the wall was the only friend to me.
They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,
If that’s the case I’ll sure be living longer.
Took me years to realize but I finally understand,
Taking care of your family is what really makes a man.
Looking back its kind of sad,
I always blew every chance I had.
I never snitched or passed the blame,
Owning up to my actions is how I know I’ve changed.
A man can forgive the but not forget,
But in the end you can’t live with regrets.
Retire my name from the game, I’m going legit.
My future’s bright if I don’t quit.
Like they say, I was blind but now I see,
Never want to go back to the same old me.
