I have a question. I recently learned that the inmates don't get paid for working. Also they can't respond via JPay, only through snail mail. Ok so they don't get paid, then how do they get the funds for the stamps for their letters and funds for envelopes, writing paper etc. just curious. I thought maybe their family gives them money but what if they have no one sending them money? Thank you!

Hey Adreamerzsoul, if they don’t have outside support from friends or family, they might have an inside hustle – tattooing, artwork, gambling, or about a zillion other things. Absent that, indigent inmates can qualify for writing materials furnished by the state.

Last year though, the U.S. government made Covid economic impact payments available to incarcerated individuals. For those that applied for and received these, it’s been life changing.
