Today is has been announced that smoking will be banned in all New South Wales prisons from April 1st, 2015.
Upside : Prisoners will get nicotine patches or chewing gum for free, officers will have to pay $5.90 a month for patches, but will not be allowed to chew gum on duty.
Downside: The approx. $20.00 per week that prisoners are currently allowed for tobacco and cigarette papers will not be transferred to their weekly "buy-up" accounts.
Corollary : The tobacco companies will appeal this decision in the civil courts.

Next month Queensland will become the first state in Australia to ban smoking in its prisons.
Aoteora/NewZealand did this a while back, with a consequent upsurge in violence behind the walls.
Queensland has employed additional prison officers on short contracts, as a proactive measure.
