I taught Derald when he was in his teens. I cared very much for him and testified at a preliminary hearing. I g pop und his post, and I would like to start writing to him again, (and only him). But I cannot figure out how to do that. Addotionally, I cannot find a place on this site to answer that question. Can anyone help?

Dear Janet,

I'm sure he'll be happy to hear from you and you'll make two ppl feeling happy: him and yourself! Good that there are teachers like you who care for and about the kids they teach!

Hi Janet, there’s not much to it. Grab your favorite pen or keyboard and write.

I’m partial to actual, physical letters for this – it’s more of a personal touch – and while I’m not familiar with California DCR mail rules, a universally accepted approach for everyone I write includes the following: white paper, black or blue ink, five pages max, single-sided, inmate’s name and register number (and page number) on every page, my name and return address on page one, and on the envelope, your first and last name, return address, and the inmate’s name, register number, and address exactly as it appears on, in this case, Derald’s profile page. Be sure you’re logged-in to your WAP account and scroll down to the “Contact Derald Now” section at the bottom for his contact info. If you’re not logged in, the address is obscured.

Do not embellish the paper or envelope with stickers, tape, colored pencil, or basically anything except black or blue ink (and a postage stamp, of course).

There are other ways to initiate contact, but in my view (and my buds’) old-school is the best. It’s tactile, tangible, and quite literally, a keepsake – to be enjoyed over and over.

I’m gonna bet you’re gonna make Derald’s day/week/month, and far longer. And while I’m just some random stranger here, I’m already happy for you both.

Best wishes =)
