Hello people I'm new to this whole Death Row thing I was watching a program on Death Row, at the end it says tat an write to a Death Row inmate so I thought I would give it ago and see if I can help bring a glimmer of light to there lives. Anyway I started writing to a guy from Florida in October I think anyway the last letter I received he was telling me about his mate also on Death Row that no1 write's to him so I started writing to him too because I felt sorry for him lol.
Is there any advise you guys would give me as I presume that some of you guys have be writing to DR inmates for a while? I'm 22 so don't have any experience in this sort of thing.
How many penpals do you guys have? Is two penpals to much?
Also it is first time doing these forum things so I apologise if I do anything wrong lol.

thanks mike

The two people I write to see each other as brothers they are from the same place but never knew each other on the outside but they look out for one another, i like to help people that are in a worse circumstance than me so i really hope i can help :)

I am sure your letters are already helping lift their spirits.

My main pal on DR, who is no longer my, but my spouse, has three that are his brothers, but not real brothers, so I understand.

I bet it can be mentally and emotionally draining. some times I struggle with what to say with like stuff on the outside world because they might be thinking I'm rubbing it in when I aren't? but I really hope they don't see it like that because its not nastily or malicious.

Actually, they see it a little differently. Hearing about what we do out here gives them a glimpse of the " Free World". They would not see that as being rubbed in.

The draining parts come when their friends get a date. The closer that date gets, the harder it is on them.

Those were the toughest letters. Finding the right words, and being positive at the same time. It's heartbreaking.

Hi ! I think u made right choice to write to inmate from Death Row. As you see, you will bring "light" in his dark life and as someone else said before, it's always emotionally experience write to these guys knowing one day the'll be executed. Usually is not good to write people in same facility, because sometimes can start some jealousy-troubles, but you'll decide what is better.
Years ago I wrote to two inmates from DR, both sadly executed, and it was special experience I never will forget. I discovered a man, someone with deep emotions and even it can be "crazy", also with some dreams. We didn't talk much about their future execution, we talken about many subjects, also their past life, daily life, desires, dreams. I know with my humble present I gave them some joy and as I say a "window" in free world. But when they passed away I feeling down, I was emotionally touched ... this is "worst" part of friendship with people from DR.
I also read on your profil you are a guy, I really appreciate when a man write to inmates, it's not commun as most of times are women. That's very nice!

Writing someone in Death Row can be, at times, mentally and emotionally draining. Other times it can be extremely rewarding.

I started off with one D.R. Pen-pal and I ended up collecting his close friends as pals, and that gave me a total of 5 D.R. Pals. All were housed together.

I would feel guilt as I was giving , what I thought was 'false hope'. I would walk away from visits thinking what have you done? You know he will have a date soon.

Then the laws changed, their sentences were reduced to lesser terms and I began to realize that what I thought was false hope was actually the exact opposite.

So, my advice here is, write as many as you feel comfortable writing. And never feel bad about giving them any kind of hope. You never know how the odds are stacked and they may very well be in your pal's favor.

I don't think two penpals is too many...it depends on the level of commitment you're willing to make and since it seems like you're good with two...there should be no issue :)

It's often discouraged to write two penpals in the same facility because they might get jealous or possessive of the penpal friendship. However, since yours are pals and seem to know about it...no harm no foul there.

I just have one, really awesome super good, penpal but I have had as many as 7.

Welcome to the forum!!
