In a way solitary is the death penalty, when left in it for a long time. Body is alive but, geeez.......

Since I got hooked up with my chica, my interest level in corrections and penology has been all consuming at times. My knowledge of psychology is admittedly minimal, but I would think that places like most DR cells, SHU, ADX Florence, etc. would have to be maddening to the point of causing psychotic episodes over an extended period of time.

In the 1970's a psychologist named Henry Harlow devised a sensory deprivation experiment of sorts using monkeys which he called "the pit of despair" (yes, predating The Princess Bride) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pit_of_despair . What these experiments "proved" is what conventional wisdom would already suggest; that higher primates are social beings and that they can essentially be psychologically destroyed by extended periods of isolation.

With that being said, I wonder what would be a compromise to these conditions which would still satisfy the safety concerns of corrections officials? Certain offenders would almost certainly attempt to harm CO's or other inmates if given the opportunity. Then you have the gang warlords from the various prison gangs who would attempt to terrorize other inmates or direct criminal activities back on the streets if given the slightest opportunity. There has to be a golden mean somewhere between what I consider to be brutality and effectively managing the risks posed by extremely violent offenders.

I only had ever done three weeks in the hole at most and it was awful. The light is so annoying.....it never goes off so you can sleep and of course, no pillow in jail. You try to look out of the small slit in your door and you really can't see much to the right or left. No clock.

Keeping people in solitary for years is something I cannot even believe goes on. It's torture.

Besides there isnt any fluffy bed, pillows, or sunshine. Just cold hard steel and concrete walls.

Just to be clear, the "errrrrrr" has nothing to do with astonishment....I don't need those apps to imagine how it can feel to be in solitary. I've been writing two inmates who are in SHU....and they told me exactly how it feels. But like Sunray said, you can just imagine yourself in a room (even your bedroom) for 23 hours a day..... I'm just impressed some people actually worked on this app...I don't think it's fun ...not even interesting.... :(

As Amantha said before, I think it’s to bring awareness to people that don’t have any clue what is exactly solitary confinement. It’s not like imagine to stay in his own room 24 hours a day, sorry but we cannot make this comparison! Because of my work I have seen seriously ill people forced to stay until the end of their days confined in a room or bed, completely paralyzed and believe me these are situations still much harder to see. We cannot make such comparisons... The solitary confinement is something very hard to live psychologically, some people also became mad! I also wrote to two inmates in two death row and they described me their day 24h / 24, I still write to an old inmate of 73 y.o. who has been in the hole for 30 years (just last year he was moved finally in general population – he is lifer), my fiancé also is currently in PCU lockup 21 hours for day… so ...

I think its to bring awareness to people that dont have any clue what solitary confinement is about. I think its comendable someone took the time to create this for the general public.

Eh oui ... c'est bien ça une autre réalité ... il y a des situations qui certains inmates vivent pendant des années (j'en ai connu ...) et il faut avoir vraiment une force incroyable pour ne pas péter les plombs !!!

You don't really need one of those headsets. Just imagine spending your entire life in your bathroom, without seeing or speaking to another person for around 23 hours a day, either with the light constantly on, or rarely on, and eating small cold meals that you probably wouldn't feed your dog.

I know you're kidding on the square, Sunray. Even though solitary can't be mimicked, it can't be experienced virtually to gain an understanding of what it is to be confined to the hole. Especially for those whose response may be "If you don't like it; don't break the law."
Thx for the link ... where can u buy a VR/Cardboard Headset? Does it cost much? ... my fiancé since 1 year 1/2 is at PCU (Protective Custody Unit) so the cells are not much different from solitary confinement's cells ... :hmm:
Hi Pisces. Sorry I am late to the party. I am not sure if its worth purchasing a VR kit just for this one app. But just in case, see link below. From time to time, they give them away free with our newspapers.

Looks like you're from France. Call me biased but I have always been a fan of Amazon purchases just because of their iron clad guarantee.
