Compassion

Compassion is something that is missing from everyday life. The inmates on here are just too numerous for it not to be true.So we should choose wisely, and try to send letters that heal and that are something special for the inmate to read. Show your compassion. What do you say to help people?

Honestly? I just talk to them like the normal people they are. Show them the same compassion that I would any friend, whether they be inside or out. The guys I speak to just want some sense of normalcy in their lives...friendship, a laugh, someone they can trust and share themselves with. I interact with their friends and family also and they know that I'm there for them should they need me. The same as they are there for me in my times of need.
They want something mutually beneficial and not to feel like their some sort of project or charity case.

In the same boat as Farfromhome. I write like I'm talking to a friend or someone I want to be friends with because that's how I view them. I love to make jokes when I can and other than laying down some boundaries in the first letter I try not to focus on them being inmates unless they personally want too. I think the hardest part for me is that I tend to spill my guts to others and want to give them every part of me and I can't always do that with my guys. They are also always significantly older than me (I'm only 18) so there are times that I just have to roll with what they are telling me because I haven't reached the life stages they had. I just try to be there and let them guide things. The biggest thing for me is putting my personality into my letters so it doesn't feel stale. Does that mean I probably use some slang and/or higher level vocab that makes for a weird mix? Yeah but that's just who I am and I think they appreciate the honesty. I personally just wish people would treat them like normal human beings sometimes.

People who are living their lives within incarcerated circumstances can soon pick up when you're being fake. Then they would probably feel that it was a waste of their time to write to you if you were not being honest with them. SOrry that I haven't replied for a while. I've been busy with university.

Of course, people are people whether they have killed someone or stolen a car.

Yeah, absolutely! It can be very helpful to be able to support someone from the outside, give them something nice, even a photo of an animal. I think animals are soothing.
