Hi there Lousie,

I'm not the best one to give advice on first letters, though I have had a long time writing to prisoners, I've not had more than 4 pen pals over my 13 years writing.
I wrote to someone this year and they never wrote back to me so maybe my introduction letter was lacking!
None the less, I usually give a quick introduction, then mention something from their ad that I liked or was curious about. I like to tell them why I chose to write to them as well as why I am on Write A Prisoner in the first place. Usually honesty and openness gets the conversation flowing. Then I'll talk a bit more about myself, hobbies, etc. and usually ask some questions along the way. This is all rather tailored to you and your potential PP because there will be something that made you write to that person, so use that if you can. Most of the profiles mention their hometowns so you could ask about what it was like growing up in X place, or if you're overseas like me, then I usually tell them all about NZ and where I live. It doesn't have to be a really long introduction either. Don't feel pressure to write pages and pages. Just kinda go with what feels right to you.

I use to write long first letters, haha.. but that's only because I have sooo much to say already. :-) But they love that and I've got so many positive comments about my long intro mail!! So my advice is - don't hold back! Be yourself, be open, be positive, interested in them and show them some colors of your personality. :-D

* Tell them about you and maybe also why you're writing to someone in prison.
* Tell them why you write to that specific person and what in their ad that you liked.
* Ask questions.

That should be enough for the first mail. :-)
