Hi guys, just wanted to see if anybody has more knowledge on this than I do, and apologies in advance if something like this has been asked before!

I received a message on JPay saying that my pen pal's account is low on funds, which may be a relatively new feature since this is the first I'm seeing of it and I've been using JPay for years. It was a generic automated email, but I was wondering whether it's something that happens automatically when an inmate has low funds (JPay sends that email to all contacts on the inmate's list), or is it something the inmate has to send specifically to somebody on their contact list?

I ask because I strictly seperate money from my pen pal friendships, and my alarm bells ring whenever a pen pal brings up money, especially at the beginning of our friendship.

Thanks Opally, I'm glad I know about this now!

I might have found your answer in this thread.

Its not automatic. The inmate clicks to send it but its a form letter. My friend has never sent me this message and we use jpay."

@Opally I received exactly the same message, word for word, from another pen pal (who has fallen off the map and doesn't write anymore) in another state, about a week ago.

Here's the message:

"Hello -

I wanted to let you know that my Media Account balance is running low. I use that account to buy stamps for
emails and other things. Your support is appreciated, and it's really easy to fund my Media Account, here's
how:

1. Log into JPay.com or the free Mobile App (IPhone and Android)
2. Select 'Music' or 'Send JPay Credits' from your home screen and follow the prompts, OR
3. Call 800-574-5729 to speak with a customer service representative

Thank you!
This email was sent by JPay on behalf of your loved one."

It's clearly sent by the system, but remains vague about whether or not the inmate is aware of this email. Strange, no?

I've literally heard/seen nothing about this, but I looked on the JPay FAQ and it says "JPay does not have access to an inmate's account balance or transaction activity." So that doesn't make sense if you got a message like that? I could be wrong, though, but are you sure it was an automated message and not just one from the pen-pal you're writing?
