I've been writing to him for 10 months only, maybe that's why we haven't had any fights yet.
But I would say the worst thing is to wait between two letters. And to worry more than you would worry for someone who is out there. The best? It's a unique experience and we have a great friendship :)

Best: He is funny, he seems to love sending little gifts and treats out of the blue, good connection (in letters, at least). All round good experience.
Worst: conflicting views on certain things, makes for awkward moments. A bit on the pushy side at times.

I agree with this one. Also, worrying what they will think about what you write. So far so good and everything has been received in a good way. But you always wonder sometimes :)

The worst thing is worrying about them
The best thing is that he always tries his hardest to match the number of pages I write, even if it takes him a few days lol

the best: the encouragement we both experience in our letters
the worst: him writing 20 page letters and 19.5 pages are compliments on my behalf, and that's an understatement. Because basically they are love letters and I've stated multiple times that it AIN'T gonna happen. It's getting annoying, really... So I'm working on a letter explaining that he really doesn't need to do that.

Have you ever tried telling him to cool it with the religion stuff, that it's not a topic that means that much to you? For me, if someone talked about politics all the time I'd feel that way and I would tell them to pick another subject. Not like it's a "forbidden" topic but just that I'm not going to drum up much of a response to that and you want to be able to talk about things with a bit of common ground.
I do make little forays into the sports talk sometimes even though I could care less about it. It's just so sad for my pp to NEVER be able to say anything about his favorite thing in the whole wide world, ha ha!!!! So I let him. It makes me laugh when he's like "Do you know (fill in some sports game or event)" in this trepidation voice, like, "please know this so I can talk about it" and I never, ever will know or care, ha ha ha! Poor guy. Errrr, yes, sports, rah rah, go team.

I have told him that religon is not my thing at all but religon is such a big part of his life in a way I understand why he talks it a great deal. As he is a high member of his church in the prison. Other than that we get on really well and send each other long letter! I completely here what your saying though. If its the only one thing we dont agree I think we are doing pretty good!

Well as long as he's not trying to convert you or make you feel bad because your beliefs are different than his then it is a compromise that friends make. Religion and politics can be pretty divisive so as long as it's just friendly...
My compromise is that I pretend to talk about sports. The funny thing is, he REALLY tries to tailor his sports talk to me, like some philosophical point or dilemma that a player is going through or some big game let down and rise up again thing. It's not like he wants to quote stats at me or anything.
Yep, gotta throw 'em a bone and let them talk... lord knows he has to listen to my drivel. (I'm about to write some to him right now, ha ha!!!)
I do think it's really cute and funny that somehow it seems to hurt his soul that I do not care about sports. He tries so many things on me, names any sport just to see if maybe THAT ONE will be the one, lol!!!! He goes, "Not even college football, not even this, not even that, how about World Cup? Women's soccer? WNBA?? ..." with this incredible tone of disbelief: how can a person be as lame as me and not care about it???? ha ha ha!!!! He can't believe it!

see religion is a huge deal breaker for me, with pen pals and out here in the real world. IF someone even utters the fact that they go to church, meditate towards whatever, decorate temples or fear Xenu then I'm off. I have literally stopped being friends with people who actively participate in any religion. In fact one of the BEST things about my pp is his utter dislike for religion too :) We have a gay old time moaning about religion and how its the root of all evil.

Nooo he is open mind and all that craic just he loves to talk about god and I am the kinda person who only goes to mass when they have to e.g wedding, funerals. So I dont condem him for being religous its just not for me. He is the kinda guy who can talk about any thing and I mean any thing lol!

I have to say I am lucky I dso like sport. One of my pp talks about it a bit and the other not so much. I think you find out from letter what you have in common and you stick with that and you try and find out more. There is always gonna be some thing you and your pen pal dont agree on or dont have in common but that life in general isnt it?
In having this thread up its made me think what do our pen pals think is the best and worst?

Well since I write to several different people, I'll use my main pp on DR in Texas as my subject for this particular question as it is he that I write the most. Best thing by far is the great conversation we share and our friendship in general, I learn so much from dealing with him. Worst? As far as he goes there isn't a worst he has been nothing short of outstanding thusfar, so if I had to pick a worst i'd say I'll say waiting for his next letter.

The worst: If they keep on talking about the same (annoying) things again and again or if they missunderstand you and don't want to get it.
Example: Once a pp asked me what I would like to do right now if I could chose anything.
I said eating fruit, as I can't eat it because of my health.
His answer was Are you poor or why can't you eat fruit??
Me: No no, like I said it's a health problem similar to allergies or something, I just can't have it. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
He said Why do you get upset now you don't have to be ashamed for being poor (LMAO! Upset? Why is apologizing the same as being upset?)
My last answer to this was "If I was poor, I wouldn't waste my money for international stamps." By the way, he may have been totally focused on his (Dad's) money anyways 'cause he sent me pics of his Dad's Mercedes all the time.. lol... It's not like I have never seen a car like that, I'm in Germany man! lol! The majority of old people here need that for their ego :rollinglaugh:
And NO that is NOT an offense for people who like Mercedes, if you lived here you'd know what I mean k?
The best: That they all have a totally different writing style, the handwriting itself and the way they express themselves. I love it.

I think you're running into a funny language barrier there and maybe a cultural one, too! A lot of people here think that what your car looks like makes a statement about who you are as a person which for me has always been ??????????????????? but I think I'm in the minority. Worst: For one PP: he isn't chatty... at all... hard for me to find connection and topics to chat about.
Another PP called me the HBIC (Head B!tch In Charge), which just made me lmao
Stu: I am with you, so much easier to write feelings down than talk about them...
Best for PP 1: He is so nice and chatty
Worst for PP 1: He talks alot about religon and I am not religous at all.
Best for PP : He is like the perfect pen pal for me! he always speaks his mind and he is always honest. we just click
Worst for PP: Having to wait for his letter :( .
Looking back on 30 years of doing this:
Best: The pen-pal that I fell in love with getting married to a lovely Christian woman, and me being virtual Best Man at their wedding.
Worst: A pen-pal's execution.
I have become a tiny fan of NASCAR racing under the tutelage of a pen-pal. Meantimes, he has become interested (a little bit) in Church history. Push and Shove.
Yeah I had pen pal before who is now out that use to love to talk about sport and I didnt mind talking about it. The only thing was I didnt know much about american sport lol!
I can understand where you are coming from. My main PP is great and open minded for the most part, but he loves fishing, hunting, and rodeo. The things that I have little experience or no interest in for the most part. I have become pretty good at shifting the conversation and managed to find a middle ground (that we both love horses). Does he talk about things that you are interested in as well?
He can't believe it!
haha I sort of pretend a little with R. Like I asked him about how he picks a good fishing spot or what the worst injuries he has gotten at a bucking competition are.
see religion is a huge deal breaker for me, with pen pals and out here in the real world.
NO no no no he hasnt tried to convert me into religon he knows it will never work! As I have told the religons who come knocking on the door its to late for me dont waste your breathe :)!

I love your statement: "old people need that for their ego" ha ha ha!!!!! Yes, people seem to need a lot of things for that!
(What does an 11 year old van with a door that doesn't work on one side say about me as a person....? Don't answer that.)
Possibly the same thing that my slightly dented rather elderly van does about me - that the acquistion of shiny material things is not one of your priorities?
