Books in public domain?

My book to my AZ (Eyman) pen pal/little bro was returned, and I did get a notice stating Amazon, Barnes & Nobles, eBay, or Craigslist are all not authorized and that’s not even the definite list.  I felt so rotten reading that, I honestly just wanted to send my pen pal a book to help him learn more.

Luckily they did not charge him to mail it back, they just decided to “refuse the package” directly instead, so it would get returned and refunded into my account.  Kudos to the mail room.

I got a letter from him and he said what most people have been doing to get books is just printing them off the internet (if they’re in public domain) and sending them in a bit at a time.  It’s a bummer, but reading is very important.

Unfortunately, I have also been informed by pen pals when facilities go on lockdown or at certain security levels there is no library access offered.  If anyone has any good sites I can print out novels that are currently in public domain (due to copyright laws) please post ‘em here!

I don’t know much about printing off these books but here’s some resources to FIND the books in public domain! Also, I wonder if it’s illegal to type up a chapter at a time on a word document, print off and send that to your PP?

Thanks Buddha!  I’m not sure with word either, I’m pretty sure copyright laws prohibit that, under the “no reproductions” but I could be mistaken.  I’ll look into it!!  My pen pal is bummed out about not getting the book but he was really happy I took the time to send him something.

Most books are online somewhere, so just send a chapter at a time? Maybe search for abridged versions? Use both sides of the paper for efficiency. I’d do that myself but I can send books to my PP in Texas, so no need.

Not sure if these short stories are any good to you and your penpals?

P. S. Can you put a post in the Arizona section about books as that might be helpful information for others who might go there first.
Did you phone the mail room to ask who you can send books via?

Thanks Kate !!  And yes I’ll start a thread up in the AZ section.  My pen pal is doing the research and getting a complete updated approved mail rules for me for Eyman!

So this doesn't bode well, my closest PP is in Lewis (AZ) and I was planning to send him a book we had been discussing. Why are they so anal about suppliers for books??? Sorry to hear you had such a hard time! Arizona is notorious for not allowing Amazon, but to hear it's basically everything else too is a bit disheartening!

I have a penpal profile for Eyman sitting in my Your inmates section of my profile. This books fiasco is a put off but the man has a birthday coming up and his profile is ending shortly.

Shade, it’s been explained to me that AZ is a prison system, especially in max security, that is based heavily on the outdated punishment system, so it’s bare bones in many facilities, no access to books, no programs, mostly lockdown 23 hours out of 24 a day.  Most states have realized that causes more problems, and have started the programs, work, and classes that help a lot of people get a second chance, or at least keep conditions safer for everyone.  Sounds like AZ isn’t quite there yet, but I’m a positive person, so hopefully things will get better and there will be more access to books and educational opportunities.

My pen pal mentioned some of the other inmates getting books through Hamilton Books.  I’ll update once he gets an approved list to me!

It just sucks because that's where my closest PP is! Now that there's been the issue with his disciplinary stuff and now being moved I'm glad I didn't send it but yeah, I'll have to do more research, Hamilton Books is a good tip, thanks!

In the past I've purchased a dirt cheap book to send to a penpal to "test the water". I'm talking £3 or less (doesn't matter what genre it was either). So if you wanted to try Hamilton books maybe scour for a cheap book that you don't mind losing.
I have done it with Book Depository to Washington Penitentiary. It was successful that time. Just not sure if it would be the same everytime.
I have just emailed the Arizona Doc regarding this. I emailed Washington and Colorado previously and always got helpful feed back. Not saying that would be the same now. Will see what appears and let you know.
