Hi there!

I recently received my pen pal's first letter :)  The envelope was printed with "indigent" on it.  I'm just wondering, will he still be able to write me regularly?  As in, are indigent inmates only given a certain amount of envelopes or something?  It took three weeks exactly from when I sent his letter to getting his reply, so I'm assuming it'll be about one letter a month from him.  He's in California, if that helps at all.

Thanks!

An indigent inmate gets a certain amount of stamps, writing paper, pens, and so on. This varies from facility to facility so its best to read the rules of the facility you're writing to. It really depends upon how often he's writing and how many people he's writing to. Letters to his legal team are covered... There are other means and ways to get stamps and writing paper depending on how good their hustle is.

I believe it's 10 envelopes/sheets of paper a week for California... I believe I saw that on CDCR website when I was looking up other stuff recently, but someone on here told me it was outdated anyway since then so that could even be wrong... I really should know this because I currently do have pals there, kinda kicking myself right now LOL.

Thank you both for the input!

ShadeyBiz, do you happen to know if we can send drawings in colored pencil?  I can't seem to find much on the CDCR website for some reason.

I have no idea, but that's mostly because I don't draw, so I don't send those kinds of things in. I think colored pencil might be okay, I guess you could try a small one and see if it gets through, then if it doesn't, you'll know for future....???
