I'm not sure where else to ask about this but here goes: before I write an inmate, I just do a quick google on them to see if anything shows up in regards to their crime. Just now, I looked up an inmate and a facebook page had popped up as one of the first results. I found that a bit unusual so I clicked it, thinking it'll just be someone with the same name, but it really was the inmates profile. It didn't really have anything on there, except 3 photos. To my surprise, they were posted during his incarceration (I double checked; the dates match up). How is this possible? The inmate is in Texas, and I know they can't even reply to JPay's electronically. Is it possible he illegally snuck a phone in or something? They definitely don't look like scans of photos someone may have posted for him, and they're definitely recent (can tell from tattoos)... Does anyone know  how or have a speculation?

Yes, the chances are they have a phone which is a bit of a forboding sign. Take it for what its worth but I would not write to that person.

It does mean they are posting it could mean someone is running there Facebook for them I run one for my boyfriend and write Everyday for him just ask him if you feel you can and find out from him. But honestly friends and family run a lot of Facebook profiles for them, or maybe he does use. I guess you can never be 100 per cent sure till you know for them.

Yeah, seems a bit sketchy. I mean, if someone possesses that sort of contaband and is so bold as to post photos of themselves with what looks to be a prison wall in the background, it puts up a bit of a red flag in my mind... I'm teetering between still giving it a shot or backing out.

Yes that was my first thought too, but I'm not too sure :( I don't think I'd be able to ask him without alerting the person who reads the inmates letters of him potentially owning a phone aka contraband in prison and I wouldn't want to be one to rat someone out like that hahah I'm sure there's some dicreet way of asking? Besides "hey, I found your facebook and it looks like you took a few selfies in prison with a phone; do you illegally own a phone?"

On my lap top you hold two buttons down and it takes a screen shot I do it all the time or you could just record the visit on your phone lol if you have to be sneaky do it that’s my advice lol

And you have to stay seated in one general area, right? Like you can't be moving all over a room or anything, can you?

No there is only one place they can sit well in my guys prison anyway and if they move from there it cuts off sometimes they let them pull a curtain so they can have some privacy

You can move around they just can’t I know he would love to show me his room and stuff but it’s still worth it

I wonder if it varies from state to state because the company (GTL) who runs IL's video visits say "you must remain stationary." :(

I think quite a few inmates like to somehow maintain a Facebook profile while incarcerated - it's their presence in the outside world.  In my experiences, they have always been managed by a family member - i.e their Mum in one case, who posts statuses on their behalf.  Of course, there would be exceptions to that due to the smuggling of phones etc.  It's not necessarily a red flag they have a Facebook page though..

There are companies that inmates can pay that will handle that type of thing. My PP in NJ state used Jerzee's Vision, LLC (though they provide more services then just facebook manager) for a while. Was a good way that he was able to reach out and get in contact with family and friends that were unable to come to visit or work out how to use JPay (also having a limited number of people they can have on their list to call makes contact hard) so he was able to reconnect with a lot of people. He would give them a list of posts and send messages through and I think every couple of weeks they would provide a report back to him on how people interacted which his page and any messages received.

He is unable to look at it him self and has little undertanding of how the platform works, though knows its one of the main ways that people interat with each other these days.

Given the poor service of Jerzee's Vision he has given away the service and I manage his facebook now and slowly educating him on different elements.

I agree don’t red flag it just cause of a Facebook there are many reasons he could be on there it’s not fair to just think it’s a phone I don’t think anyone should ever be discouraged to write without full facts but the choice is yours.

They could easily take pictures of themselves inside and send them to someone who posts them on their Facebook. My friend sends me pics of herself regularly through jpay. I would post them on her Facebook if she wanted me to.

Even if they are using a phone, I don't feel its our business. They have to consider the risk/reward associated with that. I don't tell her how to do her time. The guards bring in the phones so I have heard its not that serious anyway since the guards are making money.

I agree dannymay we shouldn’t just kinda judge and don’t know about the whole guard thing but your right I guess they just do their time the way they have too I really do think it’s more likely they have someone on the outside doing it though.
