FWIW, my previous PP was in a KY prison and said a lot of the guys put up gay ads simply to get donations. That seems far more prevelant in KY though, for some reason.

Unfortunately I also have to say, that not every here as gay man listed man is real a gay. I have written 5 month a "gay" man and as longer we wrote as more I was wondering, if he realy is gay. Maybe you remember: it was the one who told me he need money for a lawyer. After some very direct questions I knew, he is not a gay one!!

Gay man usually dont have children. If they have a relationship it means mostly double income. So the possibility getting donations is higher, especially when the person outside is lonly and Single. But to say it very clear: there are also real gay persons in prison and they are honest!

Its because it is a MAJOR con being pulled by KY inmates. They were banned from here about a year ago but now the same tricks. DO NOT GET INVOLVED. I have been burned more than once! BIG TIME! Im talking thousands of dollars!

I strongly urge people to contact the Attorney General of the State of Kentucky Contact Us - Kentucky Attorney General. PLEASE HELP ME STOP THIS FRAUD!

Because they prey on gay men - they think we are easier targets and have the money to send them. Most females dont fall for it so they know they can con the gay guys easier. Its is REALLY BAD. They have no morals or shame. Most of the inmates in there think it is completely cool that they do it.
Very informative article, not in the least surprising really, but certainly the hard truth in it, which is certainly beneficial for those considering a penpal 'relationship'. It's great to be well-informed of the facts beforehand. It then becomes the pure choice & descision of those considering correspondence.

It's funny seeing this thread appear again as I was actually "researching" this issue today. It is still a massive problem with the pen pal scams in Kentucky. My brother, who's gay, decided to contact three inmates in Kentucky and I have seen the replies he has received. The first one started out straight away by adding hints in the messages that he couldn't afford this and that. The other one disappeared shortly after he realized he wasn't gonna get any money out of my brother, and the third one started out by saying that there were so many con people, but he wasn't like that. Well, he has sent my brother four messages in the last 7 days literally BEGGING for money.
I don't know why this is such a massive problem in Kentucky - when you look up gay inmates on WAP the majority of them are from Kentucky. It's worrying and sad that so many people with good intentions are being scammed. And I feel bad for the men in Kentucky prisons who actually are gay.
My brother wanted to start writing inmates because I had told him about my great experiences and he has only been left disappointed.

I think this is why I approached writing to prisoners with caution. It sounds twisted, but I can imagine a hungry, lonely inmate wanting to get something out of someone any way possible. My first couple of letters were very basic - it kind of made the letters boring, but I was concerned about my emotional investment and being taken advantage of. I'm sure that there are pen pals who feel the same way when they write to inmates, but I can only speak for myself. I think that I was overly-cautious, but one other thing a good pen pal needs is to be assertive and confident when your inmate pen pal starts trying to get something out of you that you don't want to do. The inmates have the freedom to ask, but the person on the outside also has to freedom to say no. It doesn't feel good neglecting someone in need, but you also have to be responsible for yourself in what you choose to do. I'm sorry to hear about your brother's feedback from inmates in Kentucky, Zascha - maybe he might see a change in his next attempt.

This is an interesting phenomenon that I had not noticed. So I'm going to take a look at all the profiles for gay men currently listed on this site.
164 total results. Kentucky is a huge leader, though Texas is in a distant second.
State by state breakdown:
KY - 84
TX -33
OH - 9
ID - 7
FL, OR - 3
GA, WA, IL, MA, CO, NV, UT - 2
CA, KS, IA, NJ, WV, PA, MT, SC, LA, AZ - 1
Somewhere along the line I miscounted, because those all only add up to 163. But you get the idea.

My guess is that because prisons, at least here in the U.S., are like a self contained ecosystem. Self contained because prisoners from one state don't usually go to prisons in a different state, but will move to different prison within that state. A scam idea is like a virus that will spread within the ecosystem. Since it's self contained, it won't break free to, like Indiana or Tennessee or Missouri etc. Almost everyone in prison has some sort of prison hustle, and this one became popular as word spread.
I would recommend to your brother that if he wants to write to a gay man specifically, he try writing one in a different state. He might have better luck in an area where the scam is not so prevalent.

I do understand your point here, but I'd like to add that inmates do get transferred to different states. A former penfriend of mine got transferred from NJ to CA in february this year. I think it is called a good adjustment transfer, and from what I understand they can give 3 prisons they would like to go to. It can take up to a couple of years before a good adjustment transfer is given. So interstate transfers do happen.

I said "usually". I knew a guy in a Delaware prison who had committed his crime in New Mexico. A prisoner in Kentucky, if he is transferred, is more likely to go to a different prison in Kentucky. Sure there are exceptions, but they're uncommon enough that I would think the "infection" is largely contained and will spread a lot faster within Kentucky.

yes I know you said that, haha :D And you're right, they don't happen on a large enough scale to spread that infection. I just wanted to give my two cents (I'm a pain in the royal butt, lol) also because people tend to underestimate the fact of 2 prisoners they wrote ending up in the same prison. I know I should have made that clear, but sometimes it just takes me 2 or 3 posts to get to my point :D. I had a rough day today, please accept my apology :D

Just an observation, but gay men more often than not tend to be urbanites and often work in decent paying professions. No kids to support, so there is a lot of disposable income in that community. Ripe for scams. Probably the majority of people claiming to be gay in prison are just fishing for a mark to exploit.

You don't get the names on here. We usually do not use the full names of inmates if we're talking about them on here publicly. Which is perfectly ok for me (personality rights, privacy and so on...).
If you are among those who have a Facebook account, you might do a search there. If someone saying he's gay is to be found there being married with three children (as a fictional example), that would at least cause some questions to arise. ;-)

I would be very careful writing any prisoners in Kentucky that say they are gay. They aren’t. I spoke to one for 3 years. He got paroled and I never heard from him again. We were in a relationship. Also Shuan Hiles on this website is not really gay. That was his best friend I became friends friends with some of the men on here. It’s a big scam in Kentucky. They manipulate Gay men bc they know gay men are less judgemental. Proceed with caution I have to sue for all my money back

@Coreysabatino - I wouldn't really say that ALL inmates in Kentucky saying they're gay, aren't. I'm sure there's some very genuine people that actually like people of the same sex. Of course, we should be careful with any and all inmates in case of scams. I'm sorry you had to go through that... some people are so selfish and don't think about how they'd feel if they were in your position.

It's a scam. I corresponded with someone that I basically "knew" wasn't Gay but I let it play out to see where it would go. He claimed he was going to get a compact interestate transfer. He got out and went to a halfway house but reconnected with his hillbilly roots. I wish him well and don't wish him ill. It's just a shame that there are so many there playing this and between writeaprisoner.com and the KY prison system, they don't care who gets scammed as long as they make money. Lives mean nothing to them. It's sad but it's reality. I'm stepping off that desperate boat.
