As a card-carrying newbie here I obviously have a lot to learn and hope to do just that, with the help of you guys.

My first letter from an inmate arrived several days ago. I had no idea what to expect and have to admit to being a little disappointed. The letter was unsigned and written on computer, so just a printed page. Not only that, the content was, well I would say "weird". Most of it was like fixed phrases I will not quote any of it but it really didn't sound to me like original thought, ideas or even like a person talking to me. And he repeated himself a lot. Maybe that means he found nothing much in my first letter to him that he could latch onto. What I would like to know is do other members have similar experiences or do you guys all get real personal letters to YOU? I am also aware that it was only the first letter from this guy and he may warm up as time goes on, but I was just surprised at the lack of any personal touch or feeling to the letter.
I also have a minor question about stamps/envelopes - do inmates just get the letter we write or do they get the envelope too, or does that vary by state? I am talking New York State at this moment. Reason I ask is that here in Germany we have real cool stamps and a lot of variety of new stamps all the time and I put different ones on every letter hoping that even if my pp is not interested maybe he can "sell" or excahnge them to someone else - or am I being naive?

Hey Tarachan, welcome to WAP, i cant comment on the new york mail system thats one place i know nothing specific about, its my understanding that they receive our envelopes usually stamps intact, some states mark them (maybe even remove them) so they are not able to be reused, so that does damage there beauty but generally speaking i think our pals get them, i cant comment on if they are swapped etc, Australia recently put out a sratch and sniff rose stamps and all my pals loved them, one thought i was pulling his leg at first, he thanked me as he had not smelt a real rose in years, and these stamps are very accurate.

My advice in regard to the odd letter is, stay true to your motivation , if you dont think you can achieve that with the author of this weird letter then dont hesitate to explain that and find a new pp, there could be any number of reasons why the author was unable to communicate in a more normal kinda way, our introductory letters should only be invitations not obligations

well techically i suppose i dont know, if you had one of my stamps and you covered the correct postage with your own stamps then it would probably become no more than a decorate sticker, you might get away with it, but it has no legal value as postage to you only in the australian postal system

smiley didnt i tell you about them?? they were put out for valentines day, the ones on the sheet smell the ones in the book dont, so make sure you get the right one, you have to use 4 for a letter to make up the extra $ as they are domestic and include gst

Here I Fl. I can send her stamps but it has to be 20 at a time, " one book" I just put them in with the letters and she get her stamps that way. But you need to check as it can be different from one place to the next.
