A new year of being a pen pal!  I was hoping I'd still be writing after a year.  Gained a few new wonderful pen pals and have started a pen pal journey with them, still writing with some that I've been writing with long-term (their families e-mail with me too, which makes me happy), lost a few pen pals because we were seeking different things with writing and that's all right, had a really nice Christmas and sent out some books as gifts, took lots of time out for myself too to remember I had so much my attention too, learned that inmates are people like everyone else and not one size fits all, became a more accepting person towards those suffering from mental health and addiction issues, visited a prison and did volunteer work to collect and donate books the inmates wanted, discussed books A LOT, got a lot of good info from the forum, didn't give up, just cut back at times when things got busy.

So to newcomers writing in for whatever reason, just wanted to say, sticking with pen pal'ing long term and not giving up due to a mismatch or little issue here and there: WORTH IT.

I'll have a look at those books Lotus, if not for me than maybe my PP would like them. Shantaram is by and ex-criminal so it's kind of inspired my PP to write about his own life and think about publishing a book.
Yes, blender with a lid off that you can't get to in time.... she's mainly fine, but having to do everything g for her and everything for me and the housework, cooking etc. all makes reading a distant memory. I'm lucky if I can listen to a podcast.

I didn't read Shantaram yet, Violet, so I'll check it out!  A pen pal of mine and I just finished reading and discussing Styxx, and I'd like to start reading the acclaimed The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth) novels.  And thanks for your good cheer, I got some letters yesterday, looking forward to sending out replies on the weekend!  I'm sure your toddler is keeping busy (one of my favorite jokes is Jerry Seinfeld's - having a toddler is a lot like having a blender with the lid off!) Enjoy those wild years of fun and all the snuggles!  -Lotus

That's good news to hear Lotus. It's always so nice to hear that people are blown away by just how much they get out of writing letters to people incarcerated.
My new year is starting off with new beginnings too hopefully. Waiting to hear back from a potential new pen pal got me beating a path to my mailbox even more frequently.
Would love to hear about some book recommendations as I don't read anymore (with a toddler under 2 I use my spare time to shower, sleep and write the occasional letter!) but would like to pick up a book sometime this year. My pen pal loved the book "Shantaram" by Gregory David Roberts. So I got him the sequel to it as well.
