So today, I get an email from the PO box place that says I have 'new important mail'. Seeing as the PO Box addy was only used for inmates...it can only mean ONE thing!

I HAVE MAIL!!!!!!!

However, the people at the PO BOX place have not bothered to scan it, so that means I cant view the letter!!!! And its friday...so that means a nail biting weekend where I KNOW i have mail, but I cant view it.

But...the point is.. I HAVE MAIL!!!!!!!

:frolic: :yippie: :celebration:

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay finally! Sucks that you gotta wait all weekend though! Why didn't they bother to scan it for you?!!?!

(see, you wouldn't have this problem had you not used a PO box :p)

ITs been one whole month to the DAY. They alerted me to it, but obviously haven't got round to scanning it. Seriously, how stupid. You would think they would do it the other way round. I know, my two biggest mistakes were using the WAP email system and also a PO Box.

Yeah but I used it on the 23rd of August and it got sent out on the 4th (or rather printed out!) so that took AGES. I would have been better off sending a letter and shaved off two weeks of waiting time. LOL, I'll be here moaning all weekend!

That's why I always time it :) I send the email through WAP on the 3rd or the 19th. And a lot of times it just so happened that I wrote and sent out emails on the 3rd and 19th. And yes, you probably will be moaning all weekend. lol.

Yay! Welcome to the club! Woohoo!

And if you think this waiting was bad, just wait! It doesn't get any easier! Especially when you send a really good letter and want a reply to it the next day... Or when they send a letter and at the end they say "I just got this other letter from you. I'll reply to it this weekend." and you have the timing calculated and figure that you should have gotten this reply today and you rush to the post office to check the mail and you have a letter - but not from the person you want it to be from!

Ok... So maybe that's only happened to me. And that happened just now. Ugh. Sorry.

Yay for first letters!

Why do I get the feeling that weekends will never be the same again? Lol, I know ONE. MORE. DAY. I have to get my butt back up to Scotland tomorrow and when I get home, I'll check to see if they have scanned it. yesterday went rather quickly..its just today is DAMN slow.

I KNOW RIGHT. why do Sundays even exist in the way that they do. Why is everything closed and why does nothing work on a Sunday. Makes no sense in 2011.

Ive been looking at all the old threads in this forum. I always have a million, zillion questions- turns out they aren't so original. You can learn a whole lot from old thread. There are some depressing ones out there. This morning, I read about a few break-ups, a woman who got scammed for $2000 (r rather she spent that much on him, only to discover he had a gf on the outside all along).

But I also took some time to look at some up lifting ones :) Writing prisoners seems like it can be so, very rewarding if you pick the right person and you set up clear boundaries from the start, about what you will and wont do for them. In my first letter, I did not set out any boundaries, I really just wanted it to be very introductory and light-hearted and funny. I wanted to get my personality across and I only sent one hand written letter to my 'main' pp. I was thinking, I would wait for letter two to lay down the law! LOL

I didn't "set up any clear boundaries from the start" in any of my letters. And we're doing just fine:) So I guess my point is, you don't HAVE to "lay down the law". lol. Well I guess it's what you feel comfortable with. I'm just not one to send a first letter along these lines:

"o hai, I am bla, I do bla, I live in bla, oh and I will NOT be sending you ANY money, EVER. I am NOT looking for a boyfriend. You got that?!".. (okay, I kinda exaggerated a bit, but you get my point). It would be a bit presumptuous of me to assume that he would even ask for money to begin with or want me as his girlfriend. But that's just me, I know a lot of people feel comfortable "setting up clear boundaries from the start". It's not that it makes me feel uncomfortable perse, I just can't be bothered and I don't wanna! lol.

Hey you never know some people could have said it just like that. When I started writing I didnt have a clue they would even ask for money, i didnt have a clue about prison pen pals full stop..me and my niavity thought they were given everything in prison, they are here so really I thought nothing of it same with "Brightening up someones day" I never thought about that either..I thought il write and see if they write back thats all. I didnt discover this forum until after i had written then read a lot of things but got to say K has been the best. Id say im pretty lucky to have found him.

Lol, no this is it- I'm not really a in your face, hardcore woman who slaps down the law! Which is why I couldn't put the boundaries in the first letter and will probably introduce them as I go along. I think that otherwise, it would be not being myself (*I was kidding about waiting til the second letter). However, I do lay down boundaries when the occasion arises- otherwise I feel you get taken advantage of really easily. I grew up watching my dad get scammed for money, just because he was a nice, laid back person who just trusted everyone. I grew up to be laid back, but I don't fall for BS sob stories that lead to handouts.

Also, I picked inmates who are NOT seeking donations, so I guess I would sort of insult them by saying 'I wont give you money, EVER' in the first letter. Plus, I wouldnt mind giving one PP xmas money or the odd book as a birthday gift, so me sending money on my terms is not out of the question. Oh, and even though this is probably uber selfish, I picked inmates that admitted to being artistic and into tattoos, so that I could one day ask for a tattoo design :D (more of that forward planning), so its not like I'm not getting anything out of it.

I'm sure you've read some of my old thoughts on the subject then, which remain the same. I never thought of it as "laying down the law" but more like, here's me, here's what I'm here for and maybe you want that maybe you don't, either way is cool with me. I always do it only because in the past I did not and went through a lot of crap because of it. I do blame myself for that for not being clear and that wouldn't happen again and it hasn't. I don't blame the prisoners 100% for games, I blame the pp 50% when games begin if they didn't or are unable to be clear, real, and lay down a boundary ... don't blame the prisoner for asking or playing if you acted like "it's all ok" when it isn't!!!!! This is not the same as gifts or help between friends, I'm talking about people that think you came here to donate to their cause and will hit you up for that on letter 2. I need to shed them quickly and a good way to do that is to let them know I'm wise in letter one.

No, not all of them ask for money in letter 2 or ever, or are here for that at ALL.... but see, neither am I.

It's simply not ok for me to be wheedled for money. (Again, not gifts or help between established friends.) Already been done to me, already lost pp's over it. So that's why I mention it in first letters and by "mention" I mean tastefully explaining, not attacking them or presuming they're even like that or going to be going there; just that others in the past have gone there and I'm not into it and really here for great conversation and friendship if they need it and want it.

Not all the ladies here have had that kind of negative experience that I have and maybe you won't either...hope not, it can be unpleasant. I wish I was one of the ones that found a golden person to write to right off the bat but that is not what happened so I had to wise up.

No, not every prisoner asks for money or is here to game but flat out: some of them are, and I want to shed those as quickly as possible rather than go through more drama, so that's why I did it this round of initial writing. It worked perfectly for me. But it in no way sounds like "I'm not giving you any money!" ha ha! (rude!) I just think that there are some guys/gals that have the mistaken identity that WAP is a bank roll for them and I would like to alleviate any of that notion that I may be playing a role in that any time soon, ha ha! For me, it's just part of the weeding out process. People are either sincerely looking for what the pp has to offer or not, and if not, that's cool.

There really is a way to say why you're here without coming off rude. It's easier for me to have that reference point but not everyone thinks like me. I have to be careful with myself because I'm a very giving person and that comes across in my writing but it's been mistaken in me before that goodness= weakness. You see? I might be a lamb but I'm not up for giving up my fleece!

I think the reason why I love my current WAP situation so much is that I am not writing to a bunch of choir boys and yet I feel I get treated with a lot of respect. Maybe part of that came from me being determined to get respect this time, just on some basic level, you know? I've rambled here, hope it helped. In the end I don't think there's a right or wrong on how to handle it, just personal choice and perhaps past experiences making it right for you and how you do it. Please don't feel that sending a gift of your own choosing when and how you like is somehow "wrong" because of course it isn't.

My favorite part of the "Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" series is when the main character goes to prison in Sweden for a while and he's got laptop, lamp, bed with very nice IKEA looking little curtains and sheets... OMG. It made me laugh so hard. My joke was... if I go to prison there MAYBE I'LL GET SOME WORK DONE! I'm sure it was min. security and all that but it was still funny.

No stickers, no glue-y stuff, no whistles and bells.<--- safest way to go! Some places allow markers, some don't. Some allow this, some allow that. Some do, some don't. Catch my drift? lol. But generally speaking glue-y stuff and stickers and such aren't allowed. And yaay! So happy for you that you finally got to read your letter and reply to it.
