I received a letter today and I cannot read it. This wonderful person wrote me a two page letter, but his printing looking like some hieroglyphics. It's beautiful mind you, just not legible; he spent a long time doing it, it seems. What do I do? I can't read this. ): I already spent 20 minutes deciphering it.

People in France and in Greece (my two countries) exclusively write in cursive. Also, as a teacher, I've had to mark quite a few papers written in nearly illegible script, which alwalys make me MAD, and as a classicist, part of my training was paleography (learning to read medieval manuscripts in ancient Greek or Latin), so I'm kind of used to difficult handwriting. Thankfully, none of my penpals have a difficult writing to read.

I would suggest you write that penpal back and tell them that you couldn't read their letter and would appreciate it if they tried to write in block capitals or in a more legible way ?

My PP practices Calligraphy and varies his fonts from letter to letter. Some are harder to read than others but they're easy enough to get through without thinking too much. In future, just tell your PP that despite how beautiful it's written, it's hard to understand his letters.

I had someone I once wrote to who used to type his letters send me a leter in cursive. If it wasn't for the fact that I was born in the 1980s and started school in the 90s I would not have gotten it. Unfortunately or fortunately as the case may be we switched to block writing some time after the date and most of us including myself have forgotten how to write in cursive except for the usual words of course of hell and damn and shit... Unfortunately also some inmates just learn to really love their handwriting and lettering/calligraphic writing because they've got a lot of time to be into that stuff.

Unfortunately without a handwriting sample we can’t tell you what the problem is here though.

Miss Clock...is English not your first language? If not it can be difficult to fathom...or is it cuz he's written in cursive? As Kirsten says..none of us can see the letter so we can't really help...if you wanna e mail it to me you can and I'll see if we can puzzle it together..other than that..you're just gonna have to ask around

Well, since no one of us knows his letter, how could anyone help you decipher his handwriting?

Sometimes it can be a challenge to get the handwriting of someone read. One of my pps makes the "e" in a way I swear I've never seen anyone else writing it anywhere the same in all of my life. Don't ask me how, I honestly don't have the slightest clue. And with his first letter I really kept on guessing what this hieroglyph might méan. It was sheer logic which finally made me see "This MUST be an "e", anything else just doesn't make sense." Besides, he used it to write my surname - and there I'm sure it's an "e". ;-)

Seriously, some handwriting is hard to get. But without seeing the letter, there isn't anyone who might help you with this.

Congrats on your 1st letter anyway (no, I'm not ironical, I really mean it)
