Hey everyone. I have, at the moment 32 pen pals in America (I am living, right now, in South Africa) and what I was wondering was...... Is there a FREE website or 'way' that I can check information that is not offered on other pen pal web sites? i dont feel too comfortable writing to someone unless i have a little of their history - ie: what they have been incarcerated for and their ERD. any ideas? gobbi x

Gobbi check the DOC website some states offer good information whilst others offers none. Also you may want to try to put your pals name in google.com and see if anything comes up there.

again - THANKS anna!!!! will try them both. susanna gave me the DOC advice too. tried it - and got one lead on a potential penpal - that facility replied almost immediately (North Carolina) - sorry -\- not sure that i am allowed to mention where it was - i dont think anyone is supposed to mention a pp's name is that right? have a great day - you are up early arent you? or late? one of the two? i believe there is about a 12-hr difference between most states in the US and me.....

This post has aroused my curiosity. Apparently, my PPs crime was quite sensational, with a lot of newspaper coverage. I am curious to see what those articles said, but am I able to access them without traveling half way across the country? Is anyone here familiar with public libraries and if they offer access to archives from newspapers in other parts of the country?
I do suppose that I could go to my own neighborhood library and ask them. :-)

xray, have you checked the online websites for the newspapers in your pp's area. that's how i found out some information about my pp. usually they hold large archives for 10 or 20 years. i think it depends on the newspaper though. if you need any help finding the newspapers in his area, i'd help locate them for you, the newspapers that is. i'm pretty good at finding stuff like that. :) send me an email if you'd like my help, i don't mind.
