I'm just wondering about life in prison. Like what are they able to do? do they have free time with other inmates or do they have to stay in their cell? Can they play musical instruments in prison? (my pp says he likes to play guitar)

Basically I'm wondering if life in prison is at all like life on the outside.

I'd like to know about this, too. I know it will differ from prison to prison, but I'd still like to hear.

Viva I would hazard a guess that life in prison is nothing at all like life outside.
As to ur questions, it very much depends on the state, prison, security level, inmate and even the crime.
I had a pal on DR who was locked down 23 hours a day (in a cell by himself) and was let out for 1 hour into a cage outside, again by himself, no human contact (this was texas)
On the other hand I have a pal who goes out fighting fires and is always mixing with others (this is cali) so as u can see it can differ remarkably.
As for musical instruments, again depends on the facility etc.
Easiest way to find out is to ask ur pal :)

Hi all,

it depends from prison to prison, and from sentence to sentence. have friends how are in solitary confinement, but have friends how are more or less living on a farm, sow depends a bit. But guess live in prison is very tough, and never fun, i can tell from my pp's.

I know that she wants to do this and she will get involved in the chuch that I attend. It will just a little while , and she will be on there and will let you know.

My PP is in IL and I was curious too...so I asked him about prison life in our last correspondence. He replied back that he was at a place that gave the guys alot of freedom. They have keys to their cells, and for most of the day, the come and go as they please to the librabry, the gym (where he works) and the yard. He also said that they DO have scheduled food and yard times, when everyone has to go. And he was also telling me all of the things that they could buy in commisary...small tvs, walkmans and tapes (imagine that! TAPES!), hot pots for their cells, and other basic things. They have 2 man cells there. But according to him, the food DOES suck....so he eats alot of Ramen Noodles! haha

So I guess my preconceived notion of 23/7 in a dark cell was wrong!

hugs,
Amy

My pp used to be out of his cell most of the day, had a good cellie. Life wasnt bad. He worked in the weight yard and did lots of drawing. Now he got into trouble and is locked down 23 hours a day 5 days a week and 24 hours a day 2 days a week. During his hour out, he is to, take any rec time, take shower, eat supper, get mail and make phone calls. So, time goes fast. He is going to have to live like this until he is transferred out. He is going from Newton Medium Correctional Facility in Iowa to Iowa State Penn. Max security. He will have more freedom in a higher security, doesnt make sense to me, but I am looking forward to the transfer.

Hi
One of my really specials,,,is locked in his cell which is equipped with shower,, 23 hours , Five days a week. 24 hours two days a week. The phone is rolled to his cell twice a month for 15 minutes. The one hour he is allowed out its only to another 15x7 foot cage they call a dog run (?) He has been that way going on 14 years now since he was 17.

From what I have heard from my PP, it depends where they are. If you are in gp, then there might be more privileges but it of course depends on the institution and their behavior in general. The system is quick to take away anything from them if they fight or cause problems. Pc is another situation altogether and they have little to no contact with other inmates. They can sometimes speak to them but can not hang out. Generally they are allowed to go outside 3 times a week or so but even then, it’s a box with very high walls. That is what pc is like in most cases but it can vary based on the situation. Hope this helps. It’s best to ask your PP what he or she can have at the given moment as it changes.

Viva, life in prison depends upon what kind of facility you're in. Those with the lowest levels have more privileges than those in maximum and super-maximum prisons.

I have one pp who was just transferred from one prison to another and he said he feels like a new man because the new place is so much better (same security level but closer to his home and he knows more people).

I think no matter where it is, the food is yucky at best.

My pals who have been released are quick to say, "The worst day on the outside is still better than the best day on the inside."

What's a hot pot?

Hammondhanster,
A hotpot is a little electrical cooking pot that can be used for heating up water, soup, etc. My PP also uses her to melt down chapstick (for chapped lips). She then adds waterpaint, for coloring, to make her own lipstick, because she can't buy any.
I don't know if she wears it every day, but she did for my visit. :-)

And to think I was under the impression that a "hot pot" was a good looking person who smoked marijuana. I guess that would be a "hot pothead," you learn something new everyday here on WAP.
