You can also try Amazon.com to send books and magazines and CD's if his facility permits them

Newspaper cuttings i would imagine would depend on the state/prison but there may be some other member who could tell you more than I can, I can send newspaper items into my fiance and he is in Texas but all prisons have different rules and regs

Put it next to his name. Make sure that the method of shipping you are using is allowed to ship to a P.O. Box. I'm guessing your prison address has a P.O. Box and if you choose something like UPS they won't ship to a P.O. Box, so you need it to ship regular mail.

Actually its not to a p.o. box. can I still click the "dont ship UPS" option to be sure?

You shouldn't have a problem then. Ship it whatever way is most convenient then. Without knowing the address maybe USPS is the way to go.

urgh I went through a week of bull sh!t with online ordering. I don't have a credit card so I used a prepaid card which both sites; Amazon & Barnes Noble do take. Everyday I was dealing with emails back and forth trying to get it approved. even on the phone with customer service which was a joke.

So I used a Canadian website Chapters/Indigo who can do a debit purchase and it went through finally...

I don't know where I was going with this lol.. just needed to rant about my frustration.

In my friend's prison, no book can be sent unless he gets it pre-approved, so no surprise gifts, much to my chagrin. You may want to ask about that. But yes, if the book is pre-approved, he can get things from Amazon or B and N.

I'm trying to donate a bunch of used books to their library and even that is quite difficult, it seems! (shouldn't be but is...)

what a nice thing for you to do gooddog...so do they have to approve the books you are trying to donate? What happens there? Thats sure news to me that its difficult to donate books...it really is a bit pathetic on the grand scale of things.

The Texas prison bookstore can usually tell you if the book is approved or not, I have used them a lot and if they dont have it in stock they can usually obtain it for you, I find them most helpful

Hi. I noticed your post and that you are in the UK. I am knew to this and have just started with pen pal in Kentucky. My pen pal that I can use amazon to send books to them. Do you just use your Amazon UK account and put in the address of the prisoner? Also I would like to help with things like stamps etc. I think stamps are forbidden but they mentioend something about money orders. How does that work. Sorry if they are such obvious questions but as I say, new to all this.....

Hi Sille and welcome to WAP.

Before subscribing to a newspaper, I think that you might want to find out what this inmate wants to read: just general news, or a favorite home-town newspaper. Once you know that, you might get the name of a preferred newspaper and then look it up on the internet. I'm sure that most newspapers have subscription information, or some way of contacting them. Good luck with this. It sounds like a good project.

Institutions all over the Country seem to be all over the place regarding books being shipped in. Most inmates can tell you the policy. Often the institution website has the policy in some obscure link on their site. I have gone into Hastings and Borders book stores and they are generally knowledgeable about sending books into prisons. In fact on the occasions I went to Hastings, they actually had a form for sending books into an institution. Another bookseller that ships into most prisons is Edward R Hamilton Bookseller ( EdwardRHamilton.com ) and I use them a lot because they have great prices also and have a lot of educational books. I get their catalog and use the order form to send books into prisons. Usually the inmates get a copy of the catalog then with their order and new catalogs as they are printed so it gives them something to look through also and they can tell you if they see something they like. Just a suggestion.
Although now some institutions require that you buy books only from their approved stores which I suspect give kickbacks to get on the approved list, but the majority of the country allows books to be sent in from any bookseller/bookstore.
