My husband was transferred from a State facility where he had money on his GTL account (phone), to a Federal facility that does not use GTL. He asked me to contact GTL and find out how he could get his money back. I called the customer service number in which I had to wait 10 minutes, and then it automatically hung up. I called right back, and had to wait 4 minutes. My husband as well as thousands of other inmates only get 1 phone per month for 15 minutes. Please tell me how they are suppose to conduct any type of business with these prison phone companies? On top of that, he doesn't have money on a phone account because they have it. I mentioned this to the customer service person in which he had no answer. I explained at great length the situation he is in. I asked if there is an address in which he can mail something to them to remedy this situation, in which the customer service agent said, there is no physical address. I asked then if someone can access his account with permission, he said yes with a power of attorney. I said ok, how am I suppose to send you the proof of power of attorney if there is no physical address. He told me the inmate can email. I just can't with these companies that use inmates, friends and families to profit from. I really hate prison companies.

@Been, Off-Topic Alert: I did get an email in my burner account yesterday, from someone who reads this forum. They asked me to expand on another post I made in another thread - what exactly I put in my friend's welcome back to freedom kit. So, there's one thread to suss out my contact info, and another where they read that post. I was kinda touched by that (and happy to help, of course). BUT, somebody here needs to make good on a damn drinks and dinner invite, geography/logistics permitting, and here I sit, empty-handed. Oh, woe is me ;-)

For what it's worth, GTL does work with federal institutions for "advance pay" phone service. I signed up with that for one of my friends (though the account, and funds, are in my name). Advance pay is supposed to be facility-specific, but here's the interesting part: not for federal. I signed up my friend's original facility (which works for anyone in the facility who has your phone number), and then he was transferred - first to the federal transfer center in Oklahoma City for a few weeks, and then to his new facility. I didn't change a thing on my end, and his calls always come through - on my dime. Beyond that, a friend in a fourth federal facility (try saying that five times fast), that's not even on my list calls me on it too. It's literally a free for all, for my friends in federal, that is. Weird.

Maybe it still works from your hubby's end? The GTL thing? Maybe he can ask his unit manager or counselor? In any event, I got an announcement email from GTL last year, where the new CEO, Deb Alderson, introduced herself, said she was looking forward to exciting new things, blah, blah, blah...but there at the bottom was their physical address. Here it is:

GTL, 12021 Sunset Hills Rd, Reston, VA 20190

The problem with GTL customer service is you're not their customer. The facilities are. Major best wishes you get this solved!!!
