I was thinking of sending one of my penpals some money as a random gift. It's not his birthday or anything like that.

I already send him stamps on a monthly subscription from USPS, but thought that if he had a bit of money (because i know he doesn't have any)he could buy what he wants - i dont really mind what he spends it on.

But i was wondering - how much would be a suitable amount to spend.

He has never asked me for anything. And yes - i will make it clear that this is a one off thing because i can't afford to do it regularily and i dont want him to start relying on me for funds.

any advice?

Thanks

Kitty - I see you are in the UK the same as me - did you know the bank charges £12 for any amount up to £100?

I went to the post office but the woman said they don't do international money orders any more!

I know there is a wy of doing it through western union but I've not got a credit card so am not sure myself how I'd do that!

I want to send my special PP $20 for his birthday in december - think that wil cost me about £22 in total.

I'd say send what you feel comfortable with - I'm sure he'll appriciate anything.

I just have a few things for you to take into consideration....will the money have a complusory deduction taken out?...does he owe them money on an institutional level?..does he have money taken out for resitution?...and what i see as more important would his pride allow it? have you asked his permission

Send what your comfortable with and what makes sense... for instance in Washington they deduct 35% so i send enough to cover that too, or alternatively i send it marked postage account, and no deductions are made and its for his postage related expenses only... a good gift that keeps giving is a magazine or newspaper subscription have you considered that?

i hope thats helpfull

if thats the case and you cant access MO's cheaply then ordering a magazine subscription online with a CC gets you more bang for your buck :)

I was planning on doing it through JPAY from my debit card - they charge from $6 to $13 - which i think is about from £3 upwards depending on how much you send -which isn't bad compared to other options.

I just dont want to send too little so he can't do anything with it, and i dont want to send too much either.

I dont think that anything will be taken out, not as far as i am aware anyway.

It's a good point about whether or not he would accept it from me, i dont really think he'd have a problem with it, but like you said, his pride might get the better of him. Which is completly understandable.

I had thought about a magazine subscription - but i'm not sure what magazine.

I know there is a book he really wants - but i have looked all over the internet and can only find it in Hardback - which he wont be allowed to have.

Your lucky if you can use jpay - they don't cover the state where my special PP is.

hey Kitty-

Good question, girl! I was in the same situation this summer. My pp and I have agotten very close over the past few months and I wanted to help him out with a little money because I had a good day waitressing, so I sent him $25.

He was soooo ecstatic because he had no idea it was coming (he has NEVER asked me for anything) and thanked me up and down in my next 2 letters.

I just got a letter from him last week saying that his fan broke so he is DYING in the heat, so I sent him another $25 to help him buy a new fan (again he didn't ask me for anything, I WANT to help him!)

I think that a gift of between $20 and $50 would be good, whatever you can afford. I am a college student, so I send $25!!!

just my 2 cents,
Amy

Hi Kitty, I've used jpay to send my PP in TX $25. The transaction charge on top was $4.95 which was £18 on my credit card. I think the sterling/US$ exchange rate is a bit better now (in our favour!) Only downside was TX DOC took $12 for 'indigent supplies' so he only got half of it :o(

I have sent money to my pal, and for $50, he can but envelopes, hygiene stuff, and LOTS of snacks for an entire month. I think he said at one time CD's are like $21, fans $20, just depends what he will spend it on, how much is enough. Send whatever you want and he will do what he wishes with it:)

How about a book from Amazon? That seems to work out quite cheap if you search around their website.
