So I sent an inmate a letter last Tuesday and I DID write my return address on the envelope, but I didn't write it in the actual letter part. I've been thinking about it and I think I should have also enclosed it in the letter, just in case anything happens to the envelope or he couldn't read my writing on the envelope for whatever reason. I know that these things are unlikely, but I still keep thinking it could happen. Should I send out another letter just confirming my return address with him or should I just give it another week to potentially hear a reply back?

While we're on this weird requirements kick, since the OP did not specify what state they wrote to, here is a few I've heard of...

Missouri has a weird rule about all photos having to be put in separate envelopes from written correspondence, this would take me awhile to get used to since I usually send photos with letters, guess I better start breaking that habit. You can only write your name and a location on the back of them, nothing else, which incidentally is never what I put on pictures.

New Mexico is also strict as hell. Only white envelopes and NO greeting cards of any kind (at least where my penpal is).

But yeah, back on topic, I agree with Kate in that Michigan is the only state I know of that requires a return address on the letter. I put it at the end all my first letters just in case, but not the rest. You can tell I've never written to Michigan before (I haven't).

The only state that needs an address in the letters part is michigan.
Michigan Doc asks that return addresses are included on both the envelope and the letter. Inmates no longer recieve the envelope.
I am not aware of any other state with such rules.
Virginia doc will not allow more then 3 pages to thier inmates. One page for envelope. One page for any photos/leaflets and then the letter. If you go over 6 pages (3 A4 pages back and front to include envelope etc) the mailing will be rejected in its entirety.
I deal with several states and those are the only ones I can think of that might prevent mail being successfully delivered.

A week for a first reply? Mine always took longer, but then again, I'm overseas, so maybe that's why.

No, seriously, I'd wait, unless you wrote to a state where they don't get envelopes, like Michigan or Pennsylvania.
