I'm about to send a letter to an inmate. I thought it would be sweet to use some colored paper, it has a Diddl theme and is kinda colorful on the bottom of it. And I added a polaroid picture at the last page. (I have such a small polaroid printer and the photos work like a sticker.) I wanted to send the letter tomorrow, but I stumbled across a few websites where I read that colored paper is not allowed in prison. As well as polaroid pictures and stickers. Now I'm very unsure of what to do. I'm from Europe and sending a letter is not too cheap so I'd be very sad if they returned it or if the person gets in trouble because of it? I also don't want to rewrite these 3 pages of paper again on white paper. Is this informarion correct and my letter is really the definition of what's not allowed, or is there no need to worry and I can send it the way it is?
I wrote two other letters to diffwrent inmates on the same paper with a polaroid picture of me on it. All are ready to be sent. So I need urgent advice...

Hey!

So you're actually supposed to send it on white paper using only black or blue ink. But, my inmate send his back on yellow lined paper, so maybe that's also allowed? idk he's at Lawrence CC. Also, no stickers, highlighters, glitter, etc. No polariods, printed pictures only.

+1 to everything ST4s said. Every prison is different and has different mail guidelines (rules) but I haven't seen one yet that allows poleroid photos. It's to do with the type of paper it's printed on, which is different from normal printed photos. If you've already written a couple of others, I'd say those will be returned to you.
It's always a good idea to send plain white paper written in black or blue pen with no adhesives (glue, tape, stickers) and then just ask your pen pal what is/isn't allowed at their facilty, as they will know best.

I should add, if the mail room’s on point, a trifecta letter like this will certainly be rejected. Your recipient will get a rejection notice and you’ll likely get one too. It’s not so much that folks get in trouble over this when it’s benign, but if it’s screened for illicit chemistry and illicit chemistry is found, you should expect a knock on your door from the authorities.

Hey Dylan, it sounds like you’ve hit the trifecta of what not to do. The problem with colored paper, polaroid photos, and stickers, is they’ve been used in the past to introduce contraband (read: drugs) to the incoming mail. Here in the U.S., it’s a nationwide scourge, and stuff still gets through, basically by tainting these materials so they can be smoked.

I’m in the middle of a reply to one of my buds who has a “junkie bunkie” that smokes this stuff, usually called K2, spice, or deuce, and when this cellie isn’t comatose from the effects, he’s a raving maniac, or lying and cheating to get his next fix. It’s pretty bad.

That said, I often include color photos in my outgoing letters, printed inline, single-sided with the text (I use a keyboard since my handwriting is atrocious). I’ve never had a problem. You can still get past these well-intentioned mail rules and get colorful and photographic with a little help from some readily available technology. Good luck!
