Hello Everyone! I've been lurking here for the past week, and have read so much here that I feel like I'm almost starting to get to know some of you! I'm a guy in my early 30's and found this entire thing kind of by accident two weeks ago. I was searching online for a penpal, and stumbled across several different sites about writing to prisoners. Like many that stumble across it, my initial reaction was the idea was crazy and I dismissed it immediately. Well, it stuck in the back of my mind and after thinking about it for awhile, realized that my knee-jerk reaction against it was a little premature. I did a little more research, went through hundreds upon hundreds of ads, on this and several others sites and ended up writing to my first lady last Tuesday.
That first letter led to a second lady on Wednesday, a third on Friday (which was mailed on Saturday), and a fourth intro letter has been finished and is sitting on my desk to be mailed today. I think with 4 intro letters out, I need to hit the brakes a bit and see what I get back before deciding to write more - I'm guessing that out of the 4, I might get two responses, but who knows.
So right now, the waiting game is killing me! I've been reading everyone else's stories here, living vicariously through all of you until I get a PP of my own. I run out to the PO Box each day to check it, knowing full well that it's too early for anything to be there. I'm just so excited at the idea of finally opening that little door to see a letter in there waiting for me, the anticipation is almost unbearable!
I look forward to starting to contribute here, and encouraging others to write to inmates... While I don't have any experience yet, It really seems like a really wonderful, and rewarding thing to have the opportunity to do. I don't really have any expectations in doing this, other than a sense of fulfillment in being able to positively impact the lives of some people who need it.
Thanks to all of you who do this, I look forward to the opportunity to join your ranks!

Hi there Grillchef, welcome aboard.
I keep saying I'm new, but as people are so friendly, am starting to feel like an old hand.
Am also playing a bit of a waiting game, but am happy to say that i have had contact from someone, so am sure your patience will be rewarded.
Good luck
Welcome I'm quite new to this myself, but saying that this bunch of people are very very helpful
Welcome, Grillchef!
Don't be afraid to join in the banter or ask questions. We don't bite too hard. :)
Welcome to WAP! Very recognizable everything you summed up. I settled for one pen pal and butcher the forums whenever I'm not writing ;)
Enjoy your stay!
:welcomesign: Hi Grillchef
Good luck with your writing it is rewarding to be able to bring a little sunshine to those less fortunate than ourselves, depending on were you have written it may take a while to get a reply as some mail rooms are very slow but after a while you will find that patience is a gift much needed when writing to inmates ..........Happy writing and remember no question is a stupid question here on WAP
:welcomebluesign: to the forum! Happy writing!
Hi grillchef:welcome3: i know you will like this forum....we are family and now you are a part of that. well NOT counting the stupid spammers that show up from time to time, cause THEY are NOT welcome here:yup:
Welcome! :)
Ah yes, the waiting game! We all still play it, even the more experienced. WAITING IS NEVER FUN! lol. But once you get that letter it will all totally be worth it!
Hi there
welcome to WAP
happy writing :)
Thank you everyone, for the warm welcome!!!!!
Welcome! Glad to have ya! Be sure to let us know when you finally get your first reply, that's an awesome feeling!
I'll second that. The waiting, especially the first one or two, is agonizing. And the excitement when you see that envelope, amazing. I came to this the same way, found these sites by accident, thought the idea was insane but intriguing. Went through 100s of profiles and sent out some letters. I'll tell you, this is one of the best things I've ever done in my entire life.
Hello and welcome to the forum
Welcome :) Keep us posted if you hear anything back. Good luck!
With 4 letters to 4 women I would anticipate a response from at least one of them. You have to be patient since it does take time for the mail to work it's way through the system. The postal system in the U.S. is fast but once it gets to the prison it can move very slow. That is where the problem lies. Perhaps, I'd stop at the 4 you have written and wait to see what the reponses will be.
Welcome,
I'm sure you will get some responses. I'm kind of new myself and I agree, there are some really cool people here. I very much enjoy the advice, conversations and other stuff I get to check out here. This is an awesome forum with some totally awesome contributors. So, welcome aboard.
Thanks everyone - Yes, as tempted as I am to write to more while I wait, Im afraid I'll suddenly be flooded with responses and won't be able to give these ladies the attention that they deserve... this waiting game is agonizing though!
Hi grillchef remember all good things come to those who wait, and is worth the wait trust me,I'm new here and the feeling is awsom
Waiting sucks big donkey nuts. No matter how long you've been doing this. That being said though, seeing that envelope in your mailbox makes you go like this :yippie:... at least I do.:rollinglaugh:
Just hold on to your hat...cause soon the letters will be coming like a hurricane, cause they love too write, and you will be busy, and the first weeks run home to check the mailbox. Yeah a great feeling :))))
But Corrlinks rock too
LOL QB, you made me spit out my drink!!!!!!! Yep, just got back from checking the PO Box, nothing. I'll try again tomorrow!
Bring it on!!!! Thanks SC
Dude! (are you a dude?)... I wouldn't go crazy with checking it every day!! At least not at first, before hearing back I mean. Didn't you JUST send it out?
Yep, i'm a dude! Its been a week and a day since I sent the first one. I have to go to the post office almost every day anyway - so checking the box while i'm there isn't a big deal - two of the ladies I wrote to are in-state, so there is a reasonably good chance there will be a quick turnaround on those.
If you're already there, then I get it. lol.
Welcome! ;-) Hope you dont need to wait too long. :-) I waited for about 4 weeks to get my letter back. I have only one pp. But we are writing now every day emails and I also get letters and we talk over the phone! :-) I dont wanna miss my pp ;-)
I keep the fingers crossed that you will find a nice pp, too!
Waiting is always hard. :-)
:welcomesign:Hello Grillchef..welcome to wap.xx
Welcome to WAP Grill, I know you'll love it. :welcomewagon: Just to let you know the waiting part only gets worse once the letters start comming because you'll always be wanting the next one. I've knocked my mail man down trying to get to my mailbox to see if I've recieved anything. It happens. I'm pretty sure your views about prison life will change the way you see things once you get to know your pen pal. Despite what other people might say or think, their human and have a good side to them to. I'm glad your here. Let us know if you need anything or have a question.
Hello! This is my first post and Im glad to be here!
