Hey everyone... My name is Cristina. I am 23years old. I just graduated from college and I am trying to find a job. (Its a job in itself) I began to write to an inmate in June and he just found his way on here (and into my heart) so that brought me to ya'lls community. I am so excited to be here and I look forward to getting to know ya'll further. :)
As my handle says, I have been locked up before from Jan 15, 1973 to Feb 26, 1981 up here in Canada. I spent my last 5 years in super max because of my attacking a guard, but prison has a way of making even the most timid person violent.
I noticed that my birth year is wrong:( it should be 1954 and don't know what I was thinking. Will get a hold of admin.
Any questions just ask or pm I will be happy to answer whatever questions you have as best as I can.

I'm Sarah from Ohio. I'm in college for Zoology. I have an unhealthy obsession with penguins. I have a dog named Zoe...she is a Shiba Inu. I love going to shows to see bands. It is basically my life. I love hardcore music. I enjoy reading, mostly Jack Kerouac. I'm Straight Edge...which means I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs. I have 6 tattoos. my brother and sister's names on my feet, two X's on my arms, and boxing penguins on my calves. I like to play soccer and tennis, go camping, or just hang out. I can be pretty reclusive sometimes...people tend to annoy me easy. I love art even though I am not very good at it. Mostly ceramics and oil painting. I'm also pretty addicted to videogames. The Zelda series is by far the best.

OK. I am Mike. Very shy. Widowed but now in a new relationship. Work for a wealthy celebrity and his family, managing his money, and also am a pilot. Also, I am currently a gang leader but my boss does not know that. My gang is a "good" gang - not involved with drugs or violence. Been writing to prisoners since early 2002.

I'm 44 year old female from NJ. Mother of several children with the last one going to college next year. I was watching a documentary on MSNBC and heard how important letters are to some prisoners. At first I rejected that due to stubborn idea that prisoners are in jail for a reason and so what if they don't receive letters. But as the program progressed I changed my mine. Now I have a pp and letters are great to receive and have sent books which are greatly appreciated.

Greetings, and thank you all for the warm, kind, welcome!! I wouldn't exactly describe myself as non-judgemental. I make judgements all the time. We all do, every day. But I believe in making informed, intelligent judgements, and where there is no harm to do so, extending the benefit of the doubt to others when it could go either way.
I'm glad my "heart of gold" shows through! Get to know me and at times you'll swear it's a "heart of cold"! My kids would argue that my heart is two sizes too small. :)

Welcome Ray,
What a wonderful way to look at things. We all here hope to being a bit of sunshine into their world and make their lives a bit better, at the very least.
And to be non-judgmental is probably the greatest requirement and of course a heart of gold.
So glad to have you here and happy writing!

Ray,
Sometimes it isn't about being "safe" but rather it is about winging it and doing what you feel is right to you. The idea that prison is about rehabilitation and corrections is a beautiful one but isn't always the case. We write because we hope that we can be a bit of that - to make someone's day a little better and to make their future more positive.
Err... At least that's why I write.

Hi guys :)
Just thought I'd introduce myself. Found this site a couple of days ago, after reading a news article on DR. The idea of corresponding with a prison inmate (not necessarily on DR) had never really occured to me before. But after reading some Ads I can't stop thinking about how lonely these people sound. I don't want to rush into something I might regret, but some of the things I have read have really tugged at the old heart strings.
I'm hoping that joining this forum will enlighten me on what it means to write to an inmate, and give me the courage to make that first step.

Glad to see other writers around. My name is Nolaw97 (yeah right, like that's my REAL name), and I am a former inmate from NC.
I have been out since 2001 but while I was there, I wrote lots of journals of my experiences. When I got out in 2001, I never thought about writing about my experiences any more. But I found a small prison ministry that was asking questions about prison, and I was in a position to add to it.
From there to now, I kinda have been around a few dozen different sites, writing hundreds of posts here and there. I don't write short stuff, I try to give the reader as much info as I can give.
A couple of years ago I had so many people ask if I have ever written a book, so I did. I wrote a project called, "Grades of Honor", and ended up writing two more projects.
From then to now, I have been writing on my own prisonblogs, while still adding a post here or there to sites that I have been invited to write on. My blog has about 1000 pages of writing, which is about half of what I have written on prison issues online and off.
I think I like to write...but who can really tell?
Anyway, I wanted to make a formal introduction, and wish everyone here well.

Fairy - I've sent you a PM.
Well, I think it's about time I updated the old info that was on here!
My name is Holly, I'm almost 29, and I've been writing to people since Jan 06. So much has changed in that time. My eyes have been opened to such a variety of topics, and I'm grateful every day for that first time I picked up a pen and started writing.
I currently have about 5 pals who I write to occasionally, and one who I write to every week. I've been writing to him for almost a year and he is such a great guy. The only depressing part is that I'm in the UK and I would LOVE to be able to visit him. We get closer each time we write and hopefully we'll be able to sort out how to talk on the phone soon.
I have a partner who knows and respects what I do, and I'm the manager of a small printing company. (Gets me access to lots of different paper for my letters! lol) No children, no pets, but still an addiction to ebay and mayo!

Hey...My name is Jessie. I am quite new to the site. I started writing to prisoners within the last two years. The one boy that was like a brother to Me went to prison two years ago for something He shouldn't have taken the blame for. It really tears Me up to know that all of His other so called friends have pretty much abandoned Him. He got 18 years left to serve. Through Him I have found many great friends behind the big locked gates. Hearing from them helps Me understand that no matter how bad You think life is it can always be worse. I write to quite a few pp's and it seems like I am getting new friends all the time. Some of the people who know Me ridicule what I do...but they shouldn't...it could be them or one of their children in a situation one day...and that situation may lead to them losing the people that they truly thought were their friends.
Peace, Love, and Grease :)

No, not really, though in some institutions they could risk their "good time" and potentially hack a system to get external access from a school department PC or something but that is advised against.
If it is really important and there is some legitimate reason why you can't afford to send them mail then perhaps someone can assist you?

Hello
I am 19-my identity card says i am 22- and from Turkey. I am student and probably i will be for next 3 years. My first post was posted 3 years ago so it is strange for me to tell you about myself after those years. I have 4 penpals now so this site is quite beneficial for me to compare my issues with others. Also it is good to know that there are so many people who can help me about replying to my questions here.

Hello peoples,
My name is Angel and I am a 42 yo man currently living in the San Francisco area. I have just written my first letter to a potential penpal. Let's see... what to tell... I have no idea what I do for a living anymore but it is keeping me extremely busy. Hmm... everything seems like just a label... I don't want to be a label and so... I shall refrain. But if you have any questions, please ask. :)

Hi everybody,
I'm from Nijmegen, Holland. It's a nice city and i live and work here. I work as a accountmanager in a publish company. Since one and a half year i start writing prisoners. Actually just for fun, i love to write! I always write to many people, since i was a kid. It's great to share some thoughts but a person you like! Okay, i never expect this.....i'm a very down to earth girl.....but after almost a year writeing me and my friend start a relation. Ha ha, life is funny sometimes! He's out in a year and i pick him up that day! I also have a great contact with some familymembers of him. Lol, i only wanted to learn write better English and have a nice penpal. I'm still very bad in English, but so lucky in love :-)

Hiya! I'm from the Netherlands as well!
I'm writing with one prisoner (don't like that word) for quite some years now.
There are some feelings too yes, but he has to stay there for life. :(
Of course he's trying to regain his freedom, but that's going to be very hard.
More about me: I love to write and read, cooking and my birdy! :D

Alright, I just signed up here today to make a few friends and see what's popping. I'm 25, female and I live up in Washington State. Nothing really special about this state, besides the rain. I am a special effects artist, specalize in horror and gore with a small company hopefully soon to pick up and unfold. I've worked in live thearter and a few small movies up in NY and AZ. I'm very blunt, honest and right to the point. I'm not into games much especially with people, and pretty open on all topics and subjects. If you care to know me better, simply e mail me. I'm not mean , so don't mistake my honesty for rudeness. Very open minded person willing to chat openly with others. So come on, e mail me.

Hi all :) I joined this site about a week ago and am writing one inmate and don't plan on writing any others. I appreciate all the advice and discussion on this board. I'm a 38 y/o female from South Jersey, professor of biology for a living, have a bunch of rescued doggies and kitties and live to travel.
Gotta go, mailman just arrived (LOL) :D
Well Im just sort of an average type. 35 year old female from California origionally. I like to read, write and I raise rabbits as a hobby.

No, not really, though in some institutions they could risk their "good time" and potentially hack a system to get external access from a school department PC or something but that is advised against.
If it is really important and there is some legitimate reason why you can't afford to send them mail then perhaps someone can assist you?
I take it as a no then
???
Hello
I am 19-my identity card says i am 22- and from Turkey. I am student and probably i will be for next 3 years. My first post was posted 3 years ago so it is strange for me to tell you about myself after those years. I have 4 penpals now so this site is quite beneficial for me to compare my issues with others. Also it is good to know that there are so many people who can help me about replying to my questions here.
hiya
Is there a scheme where you can email inmate's ?
Hello peoples,
My name is Angel and I am a 42 yo man currently living in the San Francisco area. I have just written my first letter to a potential penpal. Let's see... what to tell... I have no idea what I do for a living anymore but it is keeping me extremely busy. Hmm... everything seems like just a label... I don't want to be a label and so... I shall refrain. But if you have any questions, please ask. :)
Angel
