I have a penpal who's currently incaracerated in the state of Kentucky and I'd like to send him some books and magazines. I've read over the guidelines for incoming mail numerous times, but I can't find anything in them that indicates whether or inmates can only receive a certain number of items. Since games magazines can be purchased in bulk, I was considering sending a large package of logic problems magazines. However, if the facility is going to reject 21 magazines sent at once, I wonder if monthly subscriptions will be better.

Also, does anyone know if the KY DOC will accept books via Amazon.com or BN.com? Sending books through those websites would be most convenient for me since I live in California. And if anyone knows what the facilities does with the invoices upon receiving and approving items, please let me know for even though I have no fear of my penpal, I'd feel more comfortable if he didn't know my home address.

I don't reccommend that you do this, but it is possible to get yourself accredited as an "approved vendor". I created a ficticious bookshop "L'iar & DeShonko", to send books to a prison penpal. The ruse worked all the time up until his release. Over the years I had sent him hundreds of books and magazines.

It doesn't state in the policy and procedures for "inmate correspondence" you need prior approval, just has to be an approved vendor. Effective Jan 3rd 2011.

I cant seem to find how to send a book to Kentucky prison via Amazon. Can anyone help please?

The KY DOC regulations should tell you how books may be send as in: by approved vendor only, or paperback only, etc. Just type in Kentucky DOC and it should come right up. Should be something like inmate mail guidelines.
Perhaps not every state is like this, but: in Nevada the inmate has to get any book sent to him pre-approved by the warden, so you might want to check if that rule is in place too. If it is, no problem, they just have to fill out a little form.
I know some states even allow books not from approved vendors, as in, you can mail it yourself but then they might have to be new, etc. Check guidelines.

I have a PP in Kentucky and they do accept books via Amazon and BN. No idea about the bulk question. Also not sure about the invoice either, though they do require a return address.
