Hi everybody!!

It finally happened. My pen pal asked for clothes and food. I said thought they gave you food and clothes? Then he asked for money. This sucks.

Many prisons in our current system are privately owned and operated. They do not provide food and clothes beyond bare basics. Hygeine items such as soap and toothpaste must be purchased by inmates.

Here's how I look at this situation, for the majority of inmates, there just aren't any opportunities to earn money. Even when they have a job (which pays next to nothing) it could take them months and years to save up for a new article of clothes. The clothing they are issued is substandard, nothing of quality. This doesn't mean your pen-pal is using you for money, but you do have to understand they really do have to rely on outside help financially. If you aren't comfortable with this, just tell him, this isn't something you are able to help with. If he continues to ask or whines about it, then you know it's not a genuine friendship from his/her side.

I just wrote my first inmate and am taking it as a given that at some point I will be asked for money. Knowing how much cash is needed in prison, I already have a set amount in my mind. I know that the items issued in prison are substandard. My brother was incarcerated for over 11 years, and he would share with us how it was. However, I do agree, that if you feel uncomfortable giving money, don't do it.

They get paid pennie’s an hour- some places don’t give hygiene or clothing! Crazy but true. I wouldn’t take it personally- if you can’t or aren’t comfortable giving it … just say no.
