An inmate I talk to says that she was told she has a staph infection that is in her blood stream and would need antibiotics from an IV, but that the prison can't do that and that she will need to seek medical help after she is released. They have given her antibiotics in the past and it didn't take care of it, hence needing an IV treatment. She gets out in about 8 months but from what I have read, if it's in your blood, you can have very serious complications or even die from it as your organs can be effected. I am very concerned that they don't want to take care of it and I would like to know what I can do or who I can contact to make sure she gets medical treatment that she needs and has a right to get.

Who can I contact and where can I go? Is there anything I can do? Is there anything she can do or someone she can contact? Thanks.

Hi Don, this is appalling. If it were one of my friends, I’d go straight to the top and copy those down the chain. Immediately.

If the jurisdiction is state, I’d address my letter to both the governor and state health official, with CCs to the executive director of the DOC, the warden of the facility, and your friend. If the jurisdiction is federal, I’d write this to the DOJ Inspector General and FBOP director, with copies to regional, the warden, and your friend. In either case, I’d mail all these originals and copies certified, and tracked with delivery confirmation.

Before writing this letter, I’d want to speak with my own doctor or a credentialed medical professional to get the facts straight on how fucking serious this really is. I’d keep the letter succinct. One page, max.

My frame of reference here is a family member who had a profound staph infection. It took three solid months in an ICU to resolve, very touch and go, and said family member was never the same afterwards.

Please go and find the names and addresses of these elected and appointed officials and hold their feet to the fire. Do it now.
