Inmates using penpal sites to run scams

beware of Inmates using penpal sites to run scams.
My husband J. B. is incarcerated at the maine state prison. some one has created a profile for him to scam money ect. out of women. He is Married not single. Please do the research ladies before believing everything an Inmate tells you.

Well if he was able to post a profile claiming he is single tells me he is a blatant liar, I think I would have trust issues with him

I saw someone on another site complaining that she has just found out her husband is cheating on her by putting up a pen pal ad the husband in question was also from Maine im not saying they are the same but it makes me obviously suspicious.

english2791

I am sure he will lie. That is just his nature now. He is a very, lets just say "unique" man to be with. Before he went to prison things were much different. Prison has changed him so much.

why you put up with that is beyond me

Sorry that happened to you/your husband and it's true, people have to be careful and mainly use good common sense like they'd use anywhere else. Steering clear of ads that outright ask for donations, support, legal help, investments, is a good way to weed out the top offenders. Guess it gets harder when it's more subtle. Already happened to me once, wouldn't happen again.

Well Michelle, all I can say is that I hope it is an attempt at a scam ad that he thought he was going to get slick with and make some money BECAUSE if instead it is a trolling for women (relationship) ad and that is you in the avatar picture and he thinks he needs a better looking woman than that, good luck to him!!!!

hope that was alright to say that because I know it's upsetting that he did that at all, whatever the reason. And thanks for coming on here and pointing it out to us, whatever the reason.

No! Not a problem!
I find it very very hard sometimes to say things in a polite way (which is my intention in this case, really) in english. It's sometimes hard for me to express what I exactly mean, especially if there's emotions involved or something is a tacky subject.
I didn't have a double meaning with my comment, I AM really glad you (and others) said what I was trying to say :)

I'm glad that I am not the only person on here who has to deal with these "How-do-I-express-myself-best-issues" :D

Thanks for the warning.
Does your hubby have a profile here or another site? just curious.
Cant he get that off or something...how did he find out about this?

fee
fee's picture

Profiles are able to get removed on here...My guy got his removed he just had to sign something and send it back and it was removed from here within a couple of weeks maybe more. If you want your hubbys profile off contact WAP staff and they will send something to him to sign and return to them.

Hope he doesnt lie to you.

Iv told K (this was ages ago) that if he lies to me Id find out, I mean really I can find out a lot more out here than he can. He hasnt ever given me any cause to think he was lying at all ever which is great...he promised me he would tell the truth even if it hurt my feelings and he has done a couple of times but Id rather that and he lied and there was no trust there.
If theres no trust theres no anything really.
Michelle..it also costs money to get a profile on here so he would have to have paid for it or got someone to pay for it for him. The whole thing is a little fishy...really hope you get it sorted with him.

This may sound dumb, especially coming from someone like myself, but I am new to this site and am uneducated about this end of the Penal system.

How can I further investigate what an inmate tells me?

I have started writing a Lady in TDC Texas, and am just head over heals.

I am a very trusting person and usually believe what I am told until I find out different.

I was gonna say trust your gut, but then I read the last line of your post, so I guess that answer flies right out the door. If there is anything that you're doubting about your pal, as long as it's something that would be on record or easy to look up... You could always go nuts on google and the TDCJ website. Look through the forum. Read about certain "red flags".. But the more you read about it all, the more you will start seeing them EVERYWHERE in your relationship with your pp. In my opinion that is.

I'd suggest just doing some research online, reading up on as much as you can/want. But don't let it all get to you so much that you doubt every single thing she says and that you start acting real paranoid toward her. And we're all here, so you can always start a thread and ask your questions. I only mention that because I'm sure that if you went online using the search terms "inmates" and "penpal" that you might find a lot of stuff that only focuses on the BAD things, rather than all the GOOD things associated with writing to a prisoner. That's where we come in. We can answer, or try to answer whatever questions you may have.

I don't know what you're doubting but if you're doubting every single thing she says then something is not good........................

Good luck.

well he does say he is looking for friendship with someone looking to have some fun....
maybe if u right him a sexy letter he will not want to look for fun elsewhere ?

LittleShoes

MICHELLEBELMER, I am sorry but I agree with Vixxxen and Ashy here.
Two options come to mind:
First, I suppose that the address that appears on this so-called "false" ad is his own...(his name, his inmate #, his facility..) so HE will be getting the letters. If some other inmate/s were planning on scamming for money, then your husband must know about this and has agreed to participate/collaborate or else how is the "scammer" supposed to trick people if the letters reach your hubby in the first place?
The other option is bitter: that he intentionally placed the ad and did not tell you about it. I don't mean to offend you and given that I don't know your husband all I am doing is giving an opinion, but it sounds fishy to me.

BTW, my guy removed his ad without any problem. He has to write WAP and they will send him a verification letter which he has to sign and send back to them, like others have previously stated. This process may take a few weeks though but, if done, the ad will be removed.

Advice: Just in case, I would test him. I would send him a letter pretending to be someone else (use a PO BOX or emailingaprisoner.com mail forwarding system) and see if he replies. Just my 2 cents....

I think I don't understand this.
They have used his name and address, right? How would someone scam people to get money or something but the money goes to someone else? I mean, when someone sends stuff it will go directly to your husband, right?
If I were you I would be paranoid (but I admit I tend to be that quick. I call it 'common sense' and 'life experience' though). I would think that my man put up some ad and didn't expect you to find out.

I don't mean to offend you by any means, really. But I just don't underdstand how this could be a scam.
Maybe you can explain?

Anyway, goodluck!!

Hope it's not you who's being scammed. Or, that it's you who's scamming here.

Again, goodluck.

Unique? Loose cannon is more what i thought but hey, i'm not the one married to him! I, funnily enough, read his profile last month, but the thing that made me laugh was the macho man image he puts across.

ArtemisIsLove

It looks like you need to heed your own warning Michelle, because as mentioned above, someone else can't be using your husband's information without his knowledge. Letters and money will be coming to him so if anyone is scamming, he's in on it to say the least.

ashy
ashy's picture

I am with vixxxen here sorry. All he has to do is contact wap and they will remove the profile it is not impossible to do and they will remove it. I dont see how this could be a scam either since no other inmates can intercept his mail it will go straight to him. Sorry but I dont see either how this could be a scam. And also not saying thats the case here but anyone can come and post and say that this and this person is doing whatever scam its kinda hearsay really because we cant hear your husbands side of the story.

ashy
ashy's picture

The thing is he can get it removed if he says he cant then he is lying. You cant remove it for him as he needs to send back the confirmation letter to wap for them to be able to do it. I will find the link where it states that an ad can be removed at any time.
10) How long does it take to remove a profile once the inmate has requested it be removed?

This can take a few weeks. The inmate must submit in writing that they want their profile removed. Once we receive their written request, a confirmation letter is mailed back to them.
Once we get this back, the profile is removed. This is done for their protection. Under no circumstances will we remove a profile unless the inmate requests it directly and in writing.

Thanks so much for that info ashy. I will tell him of this when he calls tonight. Can't wait to see if he lies. I think maybe he just may be getting a little too used to being a convict.

I really hope that things work out and i am also glad that you see this for what it is and not try to make excuses for him. Its sad to see how SOME men thinks that us women are totally stupid and cant find anything out. A particular ex comes to mind when reading this thread not that he was in prison but the lies and the lack of respect and thinking i was stupid and i would never find out. I wish you luck to sort this out unfortunatly i think you will need it. *hugs*

Yes it is him and his so called friends scamming people. Yes I found out about it and we have tried to have it removed. Obviously my Husband is in there for a reason he is very far from a Saint. lol. Just remember there is a very valid reason for all of them to be incarcerated. That is why I say do the research before believing everything inmates tell you. Men will be men, you never get a straight answer.
As far as cheating, well Thank God I don't have to worry about that unless he has found a boy toy in there lol.
