I started using Jmail, since Jpay uses credit/debit card and getting a credit card in the Netherlands isn't a wise decision. So I started using Jmail because it has the Paypal payment option, however I am very confused about the part where you have to fill in the information about the inmate you would like to contact.

I know there is a lot of information about the inmates on writeaprisoner however I don't know where I have to fill in the correct information. I am really scared of messing up or getting the information twisted so I really hope someone can help me. The thing that confuses me most are the questions:
Name of Prison or Jail
Housing Unit / Bed Assignment (if applicable)
Street Address - Line 1
*

the state and the Zip code etc are very obvious to me but I'm not sure what I have to fill in where when it comes to the things above. I don't want to write down here the information of the inmate (for obvious privacy reasons) but if someone could maybe explain to me in plain English words, or with examples, I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance and sorry for the stupid question!

Hi,

It's not a stupid question, don't worry, sometimes you need to figure out how things work when you're not from the U.S. ; )

The first line is for the name of the facilty such as 'Pelican Bay State Prison' or 'Marion Correctional Institution' or whatever the name of the prison is. You can use abbreviations so it can be Pelican Bay S.P. or Marion C.I. As long as it's clear which prison it is, it's fine.

The next line is for the Unit. Large prisons are often divided into units and each unit has a different name. In Texas for instance, units are called 'Estelle', 'Polunsky' or 'Ramsey'. But not all prisons use unit names or bed numbers etc. so if your pen pal doesn't have these in his address, you can leave this line blank.

The Street Address Line 1 is for the street name such as '82911 Beach Access Road' or it can be for a p.o. box: 'P.O. box 2000'. Some U.S. (prison) addresses can be quite long that's why they give you 2 lines so you have enough space.

Hope this helps.

I think I did it correctly then, hopefully.

My inmate is in fact in Texas but I can't find anything about the unit he is in, there is a mention of Darrington ''UNIT'' but I already used the Darrington Unit in the part for the facility, because that's what it said on his profile, that he is an inmate in the Darrington Unit. Did I do that wrong? Should I have written down ''Texas Department of Criminal Justice'' in that part and used the darrington unit in the second line? Now I am actually starting to doubt it, oh I really hope I did it the correct way because Jmail shows that the letter has already been sent :(

Either way thank you so much for your help! I recall you helping me with another forum btw, so thanks twice!

No, you don’t need to put TDCJ.

Just:

Darlington Unit

59 Darrington Road

Rosharon, TX 77583

Sorry...autocorrect. I meant Darrington Unit, not Darlington Unit!

"Should I have written down ''Texas Department of Criminal Justice'' in that part and used the darrington unit in the second line?"

I guess your inmate does not works on the DoC headquarters nor lives inside the DoC headquarters. So it's not part of the address.
