I have been told that you can talk about pretty much everything in your letters so I did. But then I read somewhere that you shouldn't criticize the prison or the government. In one of my letters I wrote

'If (former) inmates get put that much obstacles in their way society and the state must not wonder that laws continue to be broken and circumstances don't change for the better'.

Can I talk about (the prison and) the government that way or do I get in trouble now?

I assume my letters may get read and write with that in mind.

Not sure if you were talking to me, but I'm fully aware of the fact that they read my mail and that it's something that will never change, so I'm not naive at all. :)
But the fact that I accept it, doesn't automatically mean that I'm oke with it, I just don't like the idea of random mailstaff skimming through my mail, that's all.

Yes they are allowed to read an entire letter, and you would ne very naive to think they could not. But in reality, they do not have the staff or the time to read every word of every letter that passes through the mailroom, so they skim-read them looking for certain words as Pirish mentioned. However, they are really not interested in the day to day lives of random people in other countries, or your inner-most private comments. Just accept it as how it is because it is one of the things about writing to inmates that is highly unlikely to change.

If you couldn;t criticise the govenrment, they'd have stopped my and Hubby's letters a long time ago.

I certaintly do NOT like it at all, because what I write, I write that to him and only to him. Some things are way too private and I don't want anybody to stick their nose in my personal business, it only concerns him. From the first couple of letters you'd think they would sense my honesty and that I would NEVER intentionally violate the rules? But I guess it's that much of a necessity then...

I'm not enthusiastic about it either but they do read our letters, at least partially

CRAP, SORRY! I TOTALLY MISINTERPRETED WHAT YOU SAID! :crash: To an inmate... like d'oh, of course you meant send it to him/her.

[QUOTE=pirish;965411]You can talk about anything you want as long as it does not promote escape, is gang related, contain secret codes, threaten the lives or well being of others, or is harmful to the institution in any way. *eyes bulge out* They READ my letters TO HIM?!
I always thought they checked my letters for the things you mentioned above, and then handed it to him so he could read all I have to say privately?

Or is it just me misinterpreting what you said there?

pirish

When I say gang related I mean letters that have to do with gang business. Asking simple questions is not bad at all.

I think way too much about things. Thank you

I think they rather mean "if you leave my gang I'll murder you," letters like that in which you are also involved with the gang.

I didn't know that the mailroom is not ALLOWED to read letters in their entirety. So I don't need to worry? Speaking of gangs, when I write

'Are there gangs in your unit?'

can I tell that question or would this be considered gang-related?
