I'm sorry if this is the wrong place for this. I'm new to writing to an inmate and don't have a large knowledge of the system.

My PP is up for parole in December. His convictions were receiving stolen property, distribution of meth, possession, and escape 2nd degree. He's been locked up since march of 2010 and minimum release date is june, 2019, max dec 2022. I checked all this online of course as we don't talk about it too much other than he has hopes for his parole in December. The thing is that he's been up for it 5 times now and each time it was "deferred" - I'm assuming that means the same as "denied" based on risk? Is that right?

The reason I ask it that I want to be as encouraging as possible without trying to build him up so much that it's a huge let down again. I'm assuming behavior is a big part of the decision-making process? Is there anything else I can specifically suggest to him that might help him? I know that seems like a pretty broad question and not all cases/inmates are the same of course. It's just that I draw a blank when trying to write to him specifically about his upcoming parole, etc. I'd just as soon not even mention it but he tends to bring it up from time to time so I know it's on his mind (why wouldn't it?) From what he's told me he has no help or support from his family or friends. He always mentions that he's going through it alone.

There's a lot of factors that go in towards a parole approval. Every state is different too. There's only so much that a pen pal can do. Best of luck
