Hi all,

I recently discovered that a childhood friend of mine is in federal prison serving a lengthy sentence. I'd like to reach out to him out of compassion, but I don't want him to have my real address either. Setting up a PO Box isn't an option as my spouse would not be understanding towards that idea.

I found that Fair Shake will allow me to use their return address to anonymously send greeting cards and that is perfect. I don't need a response from the prisoner, I just want to send a little pick-me-up now and then. I was wondering though if there is any way to send books or magazine subscriptions without the prisoner obtaining my address? Amazon's FAQ states that my billing address will be included with inmate shipments and that is a total no-go for me.

Any suggestions? I'd like to keep his spirits up but I must protect myself too.

Why don't you take out an advert on WAP for him instead, and then someone who can correspond with him openly may write.

Okay, thank you both for your opinions. I am fairly certain that this old friend of mine has no one at all keeping in contact with him (broken home, family non-existent, etc) and it makes me sad to think he's all alone now.

Knowing this, I really meant well by wanting to reach out, but I just can't have him involved in my life as he once was. I guess I'll just pray for him and leave it be.

I was thinking the same thing. It would be awful to get mail from someone I once knew but they gave me no way to respond. A better way to express your compassion would be to find him a pen pal that he can write to.

I actually think you should just leave him be. Put yourself in his shoes for a moment; how do you think he would feel if he starts getting anonymous cards out of the blue, with no way of knowing if someone is being nice or if they are trying to mess with his mind.
