I sent one of the inmates a letter but, I thought that the inmate could get my address from the envelope is this a correct assumption?

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm lowkey positive you need to include your address on the actual letter. I always write my address on the envelope and the letter, and write his address on the envelope and letter as well.

There are states that don't hand the envelope to the prisoner, while others do.
Virginia, for example, do a photocopy of the envelope, and hand this copy to the prisoner, but destroys the original.

You should always include your address in the body of the letter. At least for the first couple of letters.
